After a rash of catalytic converter thefts from vehicles reported earlier this week, further incidents
have been reported in the city.
An additional theft was reported in the 300 block of South Mercer Road and occurred either Saturday or
Sunday.
Attempted thefts of the devices, which regulate vehicle emissions, were reported in the 100 block of
State Avenue and the 200 block of Evergreen Drive. Those incidents occurred on Sunday and Tuesday,
respectively, but were reported later.
In the Evergreen Drive incident, the caller said he observed a suspicious person in the parking lot of
the location who later drove away, but did not call the police at the time. He was unable to provide a
description.
On Monday, police received reports of eight vehicles that had their catalytic converters stolen on Clough
Street, Mercer Road and State Street.
The majority of vehicles targeted in those incidents were Pontiac Grand Ams and Chevrolet Cavaliers.
The catalytic converters, which contain platinum, are expensive to replace and are sometimes bought from
thieves by disreputable scrap dealers, police said.
