Birch named NLL Player of Year

Perrysburg senior faceoff specialist Alexander Birch was named the Northern Lakes League boys lacrosse Player of the Year.

Birch led Perrysburg to a fourth straight NLL championship and an 8-7 overall record, including an unbeaten 6-0 in the NLL.

Perrysburg’s season ended Tuesday with a 19-2 loss to Dublin Jerome, the second seed in the regional tournament.

Heading into the Jerome game, Birch won 202 of 264 faceoffs (.765) and scored three goals on six shots.

Birch was joined on the NLL first team by Perrysburg junior attack Zachary Schroeder, freshman attack Liam Thompson, junior defenseman Nathan Gibbs, and junior goalie Nate Ettore.

Thompson had 31 goals on 107 shots and 22 assists and 22 ground balls and Schroeder had 26 goals on 97 shots and eight assists with 21 GB and Gibbs had 25 GB.

Ettore had 126 saves on 231 shots on goal (.545), allowing 105 goals at nine goals per game, and he also had 10 ground balls.

Perrysburg’s second team choices are senior midfielder Trey Haney, junior defenseman Brady Slawinski, and sophomore long stick midfielder Sam Smith. Haney had a team-high 27 GB. Smith had 26 GB, and Slawinski had 19 GB,

Bowling Green senior attack Reece Rath is third team and he is joined by Perrysburg junior midfielder Grandin LeBoutillier.

LaBoutillier had 16 goals on 50 shots, nine assists, and 14 GB.

Anthony Wayne (9-4 overall, 5-1 NLL) finished second in the league, followed by Sylvania Southview (7-7, 4-2), Findlay (8-8, 3-3), Sylvania Northview (4-13, 3-3), BG (5-11, 1-5), and Clay (4-11, 0-6).
