The Bowling Green Kiwanis Club will meet Thursday at the Slater Family Ice Arena Lounge located on the campus of Bowling Green State University. The public is invited to attend.

The meeting will commence at noon, with lunch available for $15 from 11:30 a.m. onwards.

This week’s guest speaker is Haley Shipley, American Culture Studies doctoral student at BGSU. Her topic of discussion is Agriculture: Corn, the Midwest, and Popular Culture.

Shipley just finished her second year in the American Culture Studies Ph.D. program. She received her Masters’ at BGSU from the Department of Popular Culture. She is from Knox County, OH and grew up outside of a Christmas tree farm and corn fields – which is perhaps why she has spent her entire graduate career writing about corn.

From Benjamin Franklin to Broadway, this talk explores the history of corn and how it came to represent first America, and then the Midwest within popular culture.
