Braatz, Little leading Flyers on the track

MILLBURY — Lake girls track is getting contributions from the young and old, so to speak, which means seniors and freshmen, and everyone in between.

Lake senior Brianna Braatz has the best 100-meter (12.15) and 200-meter (25.81) dash times in the Northern Buckeye Conference heading into the league meet Saturday at Rossford’s Glenwood Athletic complex.

Lake freshman Savannah Little has already broke the school’s 400-meter record set in 1980 with a time of 59.22.

In addition, two Lake relay teams, the 4×200 (1:44.82) and the 4×100 (49.87) have the best times in the NBC, and senior Vayda Delventhal has the furthest distance in the long jump at 16 feet, 10 inches.

However, the girls will have an uphill challenge because of the strength of the NBC in girls track, and that includes perennial champion Eastwood, strong Genoa and Otsego teams, and newcomer Oak Harbor which was dominant in the Sandusky Bay Conference before joining the NBC this year.

Eastwood has won 10 of 11 NBC championships, winning 10 straight until Woodmore took it last year and then went on to win the Division III state championship. Woodmore left the NBC this year, and those 11 seasons do not include Oak Harbor or newcomer Maumee, either.

The Flyers finished second at the Otsego Invitational, but have not been able to get team wins in tri-meets against the league’s top contenders.

Coach Jason Schober, in his 11th year, says the team has been “improving throughout the season.” There are other dynamics that go into a league meet, too, like strategy.

“I think if we spread our top girls around correctly we will have a chance,” Schober said.

The Flyers returned 13 letter winners, and key athletes include Braatz, Little, Delventhal, senior Kennedy Eckman, junior Lauren Parsons, and sophomore Tabitha Balsmayer. Six returning letter winners have already won all-league honors.

In a tri-meet at NBC, Lake finished last, scoring 44 points to finish behind Eastwood (74½) and Otsego (56½).

Braatz won the 100 (12.73) and 200 (26.23), Lake took the 100 meter relay (1:46.41) and the 4×100 (51.06), Little won the 400 (1:01.06), and Delventhal won the long jump in 16-2.

The Flyers also finished last in a tri-meet at Oak Harbor, scoring 48½ points to finish behind the Rockets (75) and Genoa (51½).

Braatz won the 100 (12.75), Lake won the 4×200 (1:47.81), 4×100 (51.16), and 4×400 (4:23.93), Little won the 400 (59.22), and Delventhal won the long jump in 16-7.

However, the Flyers dominated when they hosted Rossford in a dual meet, winning 102-25.

Lake won the 4×800 relay (12:29), 4×200 (1:48), 4×100 (51.47), and 4×400 (4:55), Adeana Cowell won the 100 hurdles (17.52), Braatz won the 100 (12.15) and 200 (25.7), Balsmayer won the 1600 (6:14) and 800 (2:53), and Little won the 400 (1:01.25).

In field events, Cowell won the shot put with a toss of 28-2, Lake’s Delaney DuPrae won the discus with a throw of 85-9, Parsons leaped 15-8½ to beat second place Delventhal (15-4), and Eckman won the high jump by clearing 5-1.
