MILLBURY — Lake softball’s Lucy Boos broke out of a hitting slump in a big way Tuesday, registering three hits while driving in three runs to help propel the Flyers to a 14-2 win over Fostoria at home to open Division II sectional play.

With the victory, Lake (10-11) advances to face Port Clinton on the road Friday at 5 p.m.

Tuesday’s performance for Boos represented her first multi-hit performance since tallying four hits against Delta on March 25. She broke out of a 3-for-23 slump just as her team gears up to defend their sectional crown later this week.

“Today was a good day to get back and have a better day,” Boos said. “I think that I couldn’t have been able to do it without my team. They build me up, and they help me.”

The bottom of the lineup had a big day as the trio of Boos, Addy Boehm and Alivia King combined to hit 7-for-8 with eight RBIs and six runs.

Leadoff hitter Diem Isbell also went 2-for-3 with a pair of runs and RBIs while Ellie Rymers tallied two hits, including the team’s lone triple. Sarah Patrick tied Boos for the game-high in runs, as well.

“I think that they sat on pitches that they were looking for,” Lake head coach Dave Rymers said. “They had baserunners on and took advantage of their opportunities. They did well.”

Lake scored in each of the four innings they came to the plate, highlighted by a five-run second and a six-run fourth.

After an RBI double from Rymers got Lake’s initial run on the board in the first, Boehm, King and Isbell registered three consecutive RBI hits in the second, and Kali Bedford followed with a two-out RBI double for a 6-0 lead.

“I’m so proud of our team,” Boos said. “We played Fostoria yesterday and started out a little slow, but today we came out with more energy and had a day.”

An RBI groundout from Boehm and an RBI single from King pushed across two more in the third.

“We had some success in previous games against Fostoria, but (the team) looks at this as a new season,” Rymers said. “Everyone is 0-0. We knew we were going to get Fostoria’s best shot today. It’s win and advance at this point.”

The fourth inning outburst for the Flyers was highlighted by a three-run triple from Boos along with RBI singles from Isbell, Boehm and Alayna Meadows.

Bedford picked up the win in the circle for Lake, allowing just five hits and two runs while striking out three over 56 pitches.

Lake now looks ahead to Port Clinton, a team they lost to 3-1 in the third game of the season.

“We’re definitely going to see some quality hitters, especially at the top end of their lineup,” Rymers said. “They’ve got a pitcher that has the ability to throw it by you every pitch, so we have to be ready to hit some velocity on Friday.”

Fostoria fell to 1-16 on the season with the loss.

Rossford 14, Toledo Woodward 0

ROSSFORD — Four Bulldogs had multi-hit performances as the Rossford softball team used a big first inning to produce a 14-0 win over Woodward in a Division II sectional opener on Tuesday.

Scarlett Williams, Aubree Knudsen, Camryn Almester and Liv Hussar each had multi-hit performances for Rossford (7-15) while combining to bat 8-for-12 with nine runs and six RBIs.

Almester, Hussar and Williams racked up three of the team’s four doubles while Knudsen delivered a pair of triples. Norah Demory had three walks while Layla Nowak had two RBIs.

A big 12-run first inning was highlighted by two-run doubles from Nowak and Hussar, along with an RBI triple from Knudsen.

In the fourth, an RBI double from Williams and another RBI triple from Knudsen rounded out the scoring as the Bulldogs finished with six extra-base hits. Almester added the team’s lone stolen base.

Ary Bond had a dominant performance in the circle against the Polar Bears (3-8), tossing a non-hitter with just one walk while striking out 12 batters.

The win snapped a four-game losing streak for Rossford, which advances to face Maumee for a sectional championship at 5 p.m. on Friday.

In other Division II sectional play on Tuesday, Central Catholic defeated Rogers 13-0. They advance to face Eastwood at 5 p.m. on Friday for the sectional title.

Aside from Lake, Rossford and Eastwood, the other sectional will feature Otsego against Wauseon on Friday at 5 p.m.
