Conneaut Elementary to add inclusive playground equipment

Conneaut Elementary School has announced the successful funding of its project to enhance the inclusivity of its playground equipment. This initiative represents a step towards creating an environment where every student can engage in physical activity and social interaction without barriers.

For the past five years, the Conneaut Elementary community has recognized the need for an inclusive playground space. The lack of accessible equipment posed a significant barrier for some students, particularly those with sensory and physical disabilities.

Principal Alyssa Karaffa, the driving force behind this endeavor, spearheaded the effort to make this vision a reality.

Through extensive research, planning, and collaboration, Karaffa secured grants and donations to fund the addition of five new pieces of inclusive equipment along with an accessibility path. By creating a safe and accessible play space, Conneaut Elementary aims to promote the development of physical, social, and emotional skills among all of its PK-5 students. The primary objective of this initiative is to provide students with a range of equipment that addresses their physical and sensory needs, fostering a sense of belonging and inclusion for all. The impact of inclusive playground equipment extends beyond physical activity; it addresses the needs of approximately one in six children who experience sensory processing difficulties.

“We are thrilled to see the positive impact that inclusive playground equipment will have on all of our students,” said Karaffa. “This project represents a significant step towards fostering a culture of inclusivity within our school community.”

Some of the new equipment will include a Zoom-accessible glider, an accessible swing to add to an existing swing set, a drum set, a bell panel, and a Cozy Cocoon, which is designed for children who need a cozy space to escape when overstimulated.

Funding from organizations such as Wood County Plays, the Conneaut PTO and NW Ohio Apraxia Support were instrumental in bringing this project to fruition. Additionally, Karaffa acknowledged that this milestone achievement would not have been possible without the dedication of several other BGCS employees who worked behind the scenes to support the effort.

The goal is to complete the project before the start of the 2024-2025 school year.
