Black Swamp Hosta and Daylily Society sale

PERRYSBURG — The Black Swamp Hosta and Daylily Society will be holding their 27th Perennial Plant Sale on May 18 at Walt Churchill’s Market parking lot on 26625 N. Dixie Highway. The sale will begin at 8 a.m. and run until sold out, which usually occurs about noon. Sale will be held rain or shine. Cash or check only accepted-no credit card purchases.

Get there early for the best selection of hostas, daylilies, ferns, wildflowers, companion perennial plants, and more. All plants are from society member’s gardens, and are offered at very reasonable prices. Proceeds from the sale allow the society to continue its sponsorship of national hosta and daylily display gardens at Toledo Botanical Garden Metropark, 577 Foundation in Perrysburg, and Simpson Garden Park in Bowling Green.

Members will be on hand to answer any questions you may have.

Lucas County Retired Teachers meet

SYLVANIA — Lucas County Retired Teachers are gathering on May 21 at noon at the Highland Meadows Golf Club 7455 Erie St.

Julie McMaster, archivist, Toledo Museum of Art, will be the guest speaker. The TMA Archivist preserves the historical memory of the institution by gathering pieces of history in papers, video, electronic record, objects. Her talk will include mention of Items from 1912 to the present, collections from people with their stories of the art museum.

The Community Partner for May is Read for Literacy and new books of all reading levels will be accepted.

The luncheon entree choices include: #1 apple-cranberry chicken (apple-cranberry stuffing, sauced w/ apple brandy cream), #2 roasted pork loin (served with apple brandy cream sauce), #3 ratatouille portobello (grilled portobello mushroom cap stuffed w/ratatouille and topped w/ feta cream sauce). Entrée served with: Betty’s side salad, California blend vegetables, roasted red skin potatoes, rolls & butter, dessert. There will be a coffee, tea, lemonade station.

North Baltimore Historical Society honors local photographer

NORTH BALTIMORE — The North Baltimore Ohio Area Historical Society is opening an art exhibit of photographs by local amateur photographer James Cavett (1908-1949).

Cavett, who was a local pharmacist, was also an avid amateur photographer and his photograph collection was given to the historical society. Cavett and his wife, Janice, lived in a house near the present-day reading garden at the library. A World War II US Navy veteran, Cavett died at age 41 and is buried in Maplewood Cemetery.

The art exhibit is open to the public through August. The photographs can be viewd on Tuesdays from 9 to noon or by appointment by calling the library at 419-257-3621. The admission is free.
