Conner Rose has edged out the incumbent for the Republican Party’s candidate for Wood County recorder.

The Wood County Board of Elections on Tuesday completed a recount after Rose and incumbent James Matuszak tied in the race with exactly 50% of the vote each.

Both Matuszak and Rose received the exact same number of votes – 6,189, according to the board of elections on election night in March.

After the unofficial vote tally was released March 19, there were an additional 106 provisional ballots and 50 absentee ballots.

With the addition of the provisional and absentee ballots, the new results were Matuszak with 6,224 votes and Rose with 6,233 votes.

The margin was still within one half of 1% of the total votes cast, which will require an automatic recount.

The recount showed no change, with Rose getting 6,233 votes (50.04%) and Matuszak with 6,224 votes (49.96%).

“I’m really thankful that the board of elections does such a wonderful job, that the recount did not change,” Rose said Tuesday. “I’m looking forward to my next race and would appreciate the support come November.”

The board of elections randomly chose the Rossford Elementary polling location, which had five precincts, and hand counted those votes on Tuesday.

The recount must be 5% of the total votes cast in the county, which is around 650, said Terry Burton, co-director of the board of elections.

The total number of votes cast at Rossford Elementary was around 937, he said, but they had to separate the Republican voters from the Democrat voters.

“We do recounts all the time,” Burton said. “Last fall we had four. Most odd years we have between three and six.”

A message at Matuszak’s office and attempts were made to contact him by cell phone but that mailbox was full.

Rose will face Democrat Jeremy Schroeder, who ran unopposed in the March primary election, in November.
