Bowling Green police have arrested a Detroit man for two counts of tampering with records.

Derrick Woods, 48, remains in the Wood County Justice Center.

On Wednesday, officers were reviewing multiple online documents from the Ohio State Highway Patrol Auto Theft and Fraud Unit pertaining to Woods. Two vehicles titled to Woods were mentioned in the documents.

One vehicle was a 2023 BMW X5 titled to Woods on March 22. The second was a 2019 Chevrolet Silverado that was titled to Woods on March 28.

The first document was a request to cancel title from BMV investigators, stating that the subject sold the BMW online and that the buyer paid the lien holder for the vehicle with a fraudulent cashier check.

Prior to discovering that the check was fraudulent, the lien holder told the subject that his balance was $0 but that the lien release would take 7-10 days. The subject transferred the vehicle and Michigan title, with the lien intact, to a tow truck driver who was hired to pick up the vehicle. After discovering that the check was fraudulent, the subject filed a report with the Michigan State Police.

An investigation determined that on March 22, Woods presented the Michigan title containing a fraudulent lien release stamp, at the Wood County Title Office to obtain the Ohio title. The title was later requested to be cancelled.

The second BMW document was a title cancellation notice dated April 2, from the Bureau of Motor Vehicles to the Wood County Clerk of Courts. It detailed that the title was cancelled due to it being fraudulently issued. It further said that all documents were verified and scanned into EDIS.

Officers spoke with investigators who advised that they were working to pull video from the Wood County Title Office of Woods making the transactions.
