Amos, Rath lead BG to 15-2 win over Spartans

Bowling Green junior attack Tanner Amos began playing hockey as soon as he could skate, but he didn’t begin playing lacrosse until entering high school.

Amos is getting pretty good at lacrosse, too, scoring four goals with two assists in leading BG to a 15-2 non-league victory over Lima Senior Thursday in steady rain at Bobcat Stadium.

Amos says that while there are similarities between lacrosse and hockey, it only goes so far. He says the team aspect is his favorite part.

“It’s a lot different, but there are a lot of similarities with playing as a team and moving the ball around,” Amos said. “It’s a whole different sport, I think, and a different mentality you have got to have.

“You can pick it up fast. Anybody can do it. It’s a great sport to learn, it’s great to be a team and come out here to play together.”

BG improves to 3-2 while Lima Senior remains winless after three games. The Bobcats outshot the Spartans 54-9, including 27-4 in shots on goal.

The Bobcats were coming off a 20-1 loss to a talented Ottawa Hills squad last Thursday, so turning the tables on Lima Senior was badly needed.

“It was defintely a rough game last week, but it was good coming out here and playing a team like this and getting our feet back under us,” Amos said.

“We’ve got to make some better plays, I think. We’ve got to work on moving the ball around better, but yeah, we came out and played pretty well,” Amos continued.

Amos scored twice inside a minute and a half to give the Bobcats a quick 2-0 lead. BG scored six first quarter goals before the Spartans got on the board, and entering the second quarter the Bobcats had already built a 9-2 lead, outshooting the Spartans, 20-2.

The Spartans’ defense stepped up in the second quarter, and BG scored four more goals before halftime and added one each in the third and fourth quarter, although they were up against a second half running clock because of the 12-goal margin.

Connor Rogowski, who is Amos’ head coach on the hockey team but the associate head coach under Devin Radcliffe on the lacrosse team, says the Bobcats could have made better use of their opportunities after the opening quarter.

“We had a good start but we were inconsistent with our passes,” Rogowski said. “We’re making too many mistakes and that’s just been it. Yeah, today was a good rebound and it was a good effort by our team and then we started to get complacent.”

BG travels to Rocky River for two games Saturday and then returns to Northern Lakes League play next Tuesday at Sylvania Northview with the faceoff scheduled for 7 p.m.

Rogowski says since the Bobcats’ schedule will get more difficult in a hurry, they needed to take the opportunity to prepare for what is to come.

“I think we had a really good opportunity to work on things that we need to get better at, and I don’t think we took advantage of that enough, to be honest,” said Rogowski.

“It was just the little things we need to get better at — staying consistent, good passes, basic lacrosse that we need to improve on if we are going to stay in games with better teams.

“Again, it’s always nice to win, but we have a lot of stuff that we have to work on going into more league play,” Rogowski added.

BG senior attack Reece Rath matched Amos’ scoring with four goals and Rath had one assist. BG junior attack Elliot Baber and junior midfielder Jackson Schafer had two goals and one assist apiece.

Junior attack Isaac Baber scored two goals, senior attack Jeremiah Hanson scored one goal, senior attack J.T. Webb dished out three assists and freshman attack Cole Nagel had one assist.

BG senior midfielder Paul Archer dominated on the draw as the Bobcats took possession on 17-of-21 face-offs. Archer won the first nine face-offs to open the game, even taking possession himself on three occasions.

Scoring for the Spartans were senior midfielder Jameson Wicker and junior midfielder Skyler Slaise.
