Jackets take Arrows to 4 OTs before falling, 10-9

TOLEDO — Perrysburg and St. Ursula girls lacrosse teams played through four overtimes in temperatures hovering in the 30s, including wind chill-adjusted temps in the 20s, before the Arrows pulled out a 10-9 victory at Strasser Field Friday.

It took communication between sophomore twin sisters to get the job done for the Arrows. Eliza Hebeka scored the game-winner on a feed from Anna Hebeka to win in sudden victory two minutes and 54 seconds into the fourth OT.

“It was one to remember,” said St. Ursula coach Paul Sieben, who says he has a young team this year that was playing in its season opener after a previously scheduled contest with Anthony Wayne was postponed because of weather.

Even though Perrysburg fell to 0-2, it wasn’t a total loss because the Yellow Jackets came back from a 5-1 deficit to force overtime.

Perrysburg coach Autumn Stevens said her team had players missing because spring break begins Saturday, and many players were already inexperienced at the varsity level.

“The first half we came in and we had girls who hadn’t played together in a long time,” Stevens said. “Last year, we had 12 seniors who played together for over 10 years. This year, we don’t have that, but that is OK, because the chemistry just continues to build.

“This is only our second game of the season and the chemistry is better than it has ever been. To be able to coach the girls and be able to build them up, by the second half they found their groove and they found exactly what they needed to do — that chemistry is exactly what they needed.”

Entering the fourth quarter, the Jackets were still down 9-6, but junior midfielder Shauna Frederickson scored twice and senior midfielder Harshini Bharadwaj scored once.

Meanwhile, Perrysburg senior goalkeeper Shaye Ledyard had three critical fourth quarter saves to shut out the Arrows. Ledyard was just continuing what she started in the season opener, a 12-8 loss to Avon Lake.

“Shaye just crushed her own record for saves in the game Saturday, so coming into today she was feeling really pressured to keep going, and she did exactly that, commanding the defense,” Stevens said.

Frederickson’s second goal of the quarter came with 7:05 still showing on the clock, tying the game at nine goals apiece, but both defenses tightened their grip until the final horn.

Perrysburg senior attack Sara Yager scored all four first half goals for the Jackets, who trailed 7-4 at halftime. Yager finished the game with five goals and Frederickson had a third period goal, too, to finish with three goals.

Even though it was not Yager who provided the scoring in the Jackets’ fourth quarter comeback, she remained a big part of the offense, which Stevens said was necessary.

“Yager is our play caller and she does fantastic working the offense and they picked up on that very quickly,” Stevens said.

However, the Jackets were fortunate that St. Ursula junior Marissa Holman fouled out and missed nearly all of the second half, and the Arrows had to go through the overtimes two players down because of fouls.

Holman put on a clinic in the first half, scoring four goals to lead the Arrows, but she did not get the chance to score in the second half.

“She’s definitely tough. She can run and she’s all over the field,” Stevens said. “They have a great system going and she’s a great leader for them as well.”

Eliza Hebek and junior Kate Moran scored two goals apiece for St. Ursula, and Anna Hebeka and junior Avery Fenbert scored one goal each.

Even though the Jackets are still looking for their first win, Stevens likes the leadership that her captains, Bharadwaj and senior attack Ariyah Allis, are providing.

“We’ve got a decent amount of returners but a lot of freshmen,” Stevens said. “We are a very young team but with the leaders that we have, we have fantastic captains who are leading them right to victory.

“Of course, we didn’t get that victory today but I can tell these girls want it even more than I’ve ever seen it before. I’m still smiling after this game.”
