A Bowling Green man accusing of killing two people will be evaluated for competency and sanity.

Xiaosong Wang, 63, was transported from the jail Friday to the courtroom of Wood County Common Pleas Judge Joel Kuhlman.

He was indicted in September for the deaths of 40-year-old Bing Luan Lin and 36-year-old Zhichun Huang and the wounding of 44-year-old Renshuang Qiu.

Mandarin interpreter Qun Wu attended the hearing via video.

Defense attorney Sara Roller asked to refer Wang for a psychiatric evaluation, and said a recent meeting with her client led her to wonder how much of a grasp he had on the situation he was in.

It was prudent to make sure he understood how things work in the legal system, she said.

“I went with competency. Mr. Lawrence went with NGRI,” she said, referring to her co-counsel, Christopher Lawrence.

Competency will determine if he knows what’s going on with the proceedings.

NGRI – not guilty by reason of insanity – will determine whether he understood what was happening at the time of the events.

The incident occurred Sept. 17 just after midnight on Monroe Court. Lin and Huang were two owners of the Bowling Green restaurant Ninja Hibachi Sushi Steak House and Qiu and Wang were employees there.

A dispute reportedly arose at the residence, where several restaurant employees lived. It is alleged that Wang fired a .45 caliber handgun, killing two and wounding a third.

Wang was indicted for two counts of aggravated murder, two counts of murder, three counts of attempted murder, three counts of felonious assault, and two counts of possessing criminal tools.

Wood County Prosecutor Paul Dobson had no objection to the psychiatric evaluation.

The court set May 16 for a competency hearing and moved Wang’s trial to Sept. 9.

He remains in jail on a $3 million bond.
