Future of Pemberville’s Oberhouse Park under consideration

PEMBERVILLE — Council is discussing what to do about parks in the village.

At the March 5 village council meeting, much of that discussion involved Bob and Lu Oberhouse Park.

In 2005, council accepted just over 3 wooded acres off Bierley Avenue and north of Bridge Street from the Oberhouse family.

Oberhouse family members were present at the meeting.

They told village officials some of the history of U.S. Marine Corp. veteran Robert C. Oberhouse.

Oberhouse lost his eyesight due to a mortar explosion on Bougainville Island in the Pacific Theater during World War II. He joined the Marine Corp. right out of high school in 1943 and was 19 years old when he was wounded.

Mayor Carol Bailey portrayed the discussion about the park as “ongoing.”

“The (Oberhouse Park) has been the topic of many discussions in the past,” the mayor said.

Family members sought information on what the future of the park land holds.

Bailey said some of the land that is part of villager parks system is located in low-laying areas, meaning it floods easily. This is one of the factors that village officials cite for the lack of development of those parks.

Other issues that are affecting parks in the village is a water line, along with a well field.

The village also is looking for a location for a ball diamond.

“We are losing the west ball diamond due to the construction of the new water tower,” the mayor noted.

Village resident Lisa Boyer, who has expressed interest in being part of the village’s Lands, Buildings, Streets, and Sidewalks Committee, has accepted an appointment to that committee.

The next Pemberville Village Council meeting will be Tuesday at 7 p.m.
