Four BGSU divers head into NCAAs

The Bowling Green State University swimming and diving teams head into their respective post seasons with multiple national qualifiers.

Divers Rayah Blood, Grace Ellis, Evie Long, and Natalia Mayorga all qualified for diving zones. Meanwhile, swimmers Joanna Robertson, Elayna Krupp, Grace Bodrock, Emily McNicol, Blanca Sanz, Maddie Bond, Morgan Sokol, Riley McNichols, Ava Vial, and Alex Johnson all made the National Invite Championships.

For the second straight year Bowling Green will be represented by four divers at NCAA Diving Zones. These are the most divers in a season to qualify for diving zones in program history tying last year’s mark.

The Falcon flyers are led by senior captain Rayah Blood at Diving Zones. This is Blood’s third time competing at NCAA Diving Zones in both the 1-Meter and 3-Meter Dives. Blood is coming out of the regular season tied with a team leading six event wins winning the 1-Meter four times and the 3-Meter Dive twice. Blood was also named MAC Diver of the week twice over the course of the season.

Freshman Falcon flyer Natalia Mayorga has had an amazing start to her collegiate career. Mayorga is tied with for the team lead with six event wins. Mayorga concluded the regular season with two wins in the 1-Meter Dive and four in the 3-Meter Dive.

Mayorga was also the highest finishing Falcon at MAC Championships. Mayorga left her mark on MAC Championships by placing fourth in the 3-Meter diving with a score of 275.05. This is tied for the highest finish at MAC Championships by a freshman diver in school history.

Fellow Falcon senior Grace Ellis is not new to diving zones either. Similar to Blood this will be Ellis’ third time competing at NCAA Diving zones. Ellis will be competing in the 1-Meter Dive after setting a personal best and winning the 1-Meter dive against Eastern Michigan earlier in the season. That was one of two event wins for Ellis over the course of the season.

For the Falcons sophomore Evie Long has had an even better second year. After only qualifying in the 1-Meter a year prior Long comes into this year’s zones competing in both the 1-Meter and 3-Meter dive.

Long heads to Louisville with one event win in the 1-Meter Dive and multiple top five finishes in both the 1-Meter and 3-Meter setting personal bests in both events over the course of the season.

The Falcons who made it to NICs collectively competed in eight different MAC Championship finals with two swimmers participating in the 200 Backstroke finals.

Led by senior Ava Vial who swam in two MAC finals. Vial placed 15th in the 200 IM with a finals time of 2:04.15. Vial then swam to a 5th place finish, the highest finish by a Falcon swimmer, in the 400 IM with a finals time of 4:23.10.

Like Vial Grace Bodrock also competed in two MAC Championships finals. Bodrock’s highest finish was in the 200 Butterfly placing 12th with a time of 2:04.41. Bodrock also placed 16th in the 100 Butterfly earlier on the weekend thanks to a time of 56.38.

Prior to MAC Championships and during the fall portion of the season Bodrock swam to the 9th fastest time in school history in the 200 Butterfly.

Backstroke sophomore swimmers Emily McNicol and Morgan Sokol both showed out at MAC Championships. McNicol led the pair swimming in both the 100 and 200 Backstroke.

McNicol placed 11th in the 100 Backstroke and 16th in the 200 Backstroke with respective times of 54.62 and 2:04.87.Sokol then swam to a 12th place finish in the 200 Backstroke thanks to a time of 2:00.80.

Over the course of the season freshman Falcon Joanna Robertson swam to multiple event wins during the season and the 6th fastest time in program in the 100 Breaststroke. This success continued into MAC Championships where Robertson qualified and competed in the 100 Breaststroke finals. Robertson placed 16th with a time of 1:04.33.

Fellow freshman Blanca Sanz left Athens after a strong showing. In her first final Sanz was able to capture points for the Falcons at MAC Championships. With an 11th place effort and a time drop of 6.11 seconds Sanz swam to a time of 17:06.77 in the 1650 Freestyle.

Sprinter and team captain Riley McNichols qualified for NICs. McNichols had multiple top three finishes in the 50 Freestyle and an event win in the 100 Butterfly over the course of the season. Similarly, sprinter Elayna Krupp swam to top three finishes in the 50 and 100 Freestyles.

Sophomore Maddie Bond and freshman Alex Johnson also qualified for NICs. Johnson added a top five finish in the 200 Backstroke on the season. Bond swam to multiple top five finishes in the 200 Breaststroke and even added a second-place finish in the 200 IM to her season resume.
