Learn about curling clubs

Learn about curling clubs and how they’re accessible to everyone on Thursday at 6 p.m. in the Wood County District Public Library’s Meeting Room A&B with Scott Piroth, teaching professor of Political Science at BGSU.

A healthy society benefits from social capital— the social connections and relationships of trust which emerge from the interactions that take place in voluntary organizations, such as sports clubs. Curling clubs foster social capital among club members, and curlers nearly always socialize with teammates and opponents after their games.

By using adaptive techniques, curlers with disabilities— including those in wheelchairs— can participate in curling. Such adaptive techniques are also great for curlers of all ages to continue to participate when traditional curling techniques become physically difficult or impossible.

Piroth will discuss the social benefits of curling clubs and the challenges clubs face when reaching out to diverse communities. In addition to discussing his experiences in the curling community, Piroth will present results from two surveys that he conducted of curlers in the United States and Canada.

No registration is required. For more information, call 419=352-5050 or email [email protected].
