Wilcox, Tyson take district titles to state tourney

ROSSFORD — Otsego senior Trevor Wilcox (45-3) won a Division III district boys wrestling championship Saturday, defeating Oak Harbor sophomore Bodee Miller (36-11) in the 120-pound championship. It was the second straight week Wilcox defeated Miller for a championship.

Elmwood senior Thomas Tyson (39-7) won a 150-pound title, defeating Mohawk senior Evan England (39-5), 7-4, in the final.

Wilcox and Tyson will be No. 1 seeds at the state wrestling tournament this Friday through Sunday at Ohio State University’s Jerome Schottenstein Center.

Lakota had two wrestlers finishing second — junior Lane Thacker (44-4) at 132 and junior Grant Bomer (37-8) at 157.

Lakota junior Braxton Quaintance (44-3) placed third at 165 and Lakota senior Gabe Garlick (39-9) was fourth at 175. The top four wrestlers advance to state automatically and the fifth place wrestler is a state alternate.

Placing fifth at the Rossford district meet were Lake junior Mason Snyder (46-8) at 113, Elmwood junior Peyton Schaefer (25-8) at 138, and Lake senior Walker Howell (38-8) at 190,

Finishing in sixth were Eastwood freshman Logan McBride (32-16) at 113 and Lakota senior Cody Biddle (24-12) at 138.

Lakota placed fifth in the team standings with 89½ points, trailing champion Delta (168), Milan Edison (156½), Monroeville (122) and Genoa (91).

Rounding out the top 10 were Archbold (89), Liberty Center (88), Tinora (86½), Ayersville (66) and Oak Harbor (56).

The next 10 were Port Clinton (55), Seneca East (53), Ashland Crestview (52), Norwalk St. Paul (48), Evergreen (42), Elmwood (40), Lake (38½), Mohawk (35), Playmouth (31) and Woodmore (27½).

Wilcox, Maize, Howell win sectionals

OAK HARBOR — Wilcox won a sectional title at Oak Harbor by also defeating Miller, 5-0, in the championship.

Eastwood senior Caiden Maize (27-5) also won a 150-pound sectional championship, pinning Woodmore senior Brant Deal (29-11) in 1:02.

Howell won a sectional title, pinning Woodmore sophomore Michael Seeger (33-8) in 3:31.

Finishing second at the sectional tournament was Lake senior Dylan Keel (30-9) at 126 and Lake senior Vince Barton (29-5) at 132.

Placing third were Lake junior Mason Snyder (42-6) at 113 and Eastwood senior Austin Maize (32-8) at 157.

Placing fourth was Eastwood freshman Gabe Brough (31-9) at 106, McBride at 113, Otsego junior Owen Kasza (27-13) at 132 and Eastwood junior Gavin Shropshire (32-10) at 138.

Finishing in fifth were Lake sophomore Brody Barton (30-18) at 120, Otsego junior Eli Henderson (8-13) at 126, Otsego junior Brayden Sadler (16-13) at 150, Eastwood junior Conner Norton (26-14) at 165, Northwood freshman Chase Peart (8-22) at 215, and Otsego sophomore Adolfo Martinez-Alba (16-8) at 285.

Placing sixth were Northwood sophomore Joseph Springer (13-15) at 120, Lake junior Micah Balsmayer (22-15) at 138, Lake junior Anthony Adams (16-27) at 150 and Eastwood junior Logan Perry (11-16) at 175.

Genoa won the team championship with 235 points, followed by Oak Harbor (211½), Port Clinton (196½), Woodmore (144½), Eastwood (109), Lake (107½), Otsego (69½), Huron (64), Margaretta (52), Sandusky St. Mary (49½), Gibsonburg (43½), Northwood (20), and Fremont St. Joseph (9).

Lakota, Elmwood combine for 8 champions

VAN BUREN — At the Division III boys wrestling sectional hosted by Van Buren, out of 16 teams Lakota finished second and Elmwood finished fourth.

Lakota had six first place wrestlers among nine total placers, and Elmwood had two champions, one runner-up, and five placers.

The top four teams were Mohawk (225½), Lakota (190), Liberty-Benton (150), and Elmwood (138½).

Rounding out the team standings were Bluffton (128½), Carey (117), Patrick Henry (73½), McComb (68½), Arcadia (59), Van Buren (49), Hopewell-Loudon (35), Ottawa-Glandorf (35), Riverdale (29), Tiffin Calvert (23), Cory-Rawson (22½), and New Riegel (3).

Lakota champions were junior Simon Roth (22-8) at 126, Thacker at 132, senior Cody Biddle (21-9) at 138, Bomer at 157, Quaintance at 165, and Garlick at 175.

Elmwood champions were freshman Zachariah Patterson (22-15) at 106 and Tyson at 150. Finishing as sectional runner-up was Peyton Schafer at 138.

Finishing in third was Lakota sophomore Mason Eben (16-25) at 106 and Elmwood junior Gavin Solarik (16-18) at 144.

Elmwood freshman Zach Schafer (24-19) was fourth at 126, Lakota sophomore Jack Reyna (16-16) was fifth at 120 and Lakota senior Isaac King (26-17) finished fifth at 150.

Elmwood wrestlers finishing in sixth were freshman Ryken Ziegler (24-14) at 132, senior Colin Campbell (23-18) at 157, junior Connor Sterling (24-15) at 165 and junior Vincent Allen (15-16) at 190.
