Trevor Madigan, Tyler Foster win district championships

Perrysburg sophomore Trevor Madigan won a Division I district championship in the one-meter diving with a score of 543.15, easily outdistancing second place Toledo St. John’s diver Edward Nyman (497.45).

The district meet began Thursday and concluded Saturday (Feb. 15-17) at the Bowling Green State University’s Student Recreation Center.

The state meet began on Tuesday and runs through this Saturday (Feb. 20-24) at C.T. Branin Natatorium in Canton.

In the Division II boys meet, Maumee Valley senior Tyler Foster, a Rossford resident, won two district championships, and he set a Northwest District record in the 100 backstroke.

Foster’s time of 51.55 broke the old record (52.6) set in 2020, and he also won over second place Bluffton sophomore Jackson Bowlus (53.36).

Foster took the 200-yard freestyle in 1:44.91 to beat second place Lexington sophomore Cooper Watters (1:45.78).

In the 200 hundred intermediate medley, Eastwood junior Eric Sander qualified for state, finishing third in 1:58.68 to place behind North Baltimore junior Andy Jiang (1:54.78) and Ottawa Hills freshman Thomas Lathrop (1:56.36). Sander broke the Eastwood school record previously set by his brother Ian Sander.

Eric Sander also qualified for state in the 100 backstroke, finishing in sixth in 54.79. Eastwood junior A.J. O’Brien qualified for state in the 500 freestyle, finishing in fifth (5:01.39).

Bowling Green senior Alex Xu qualified for state with at-large bids in the 100 butterfly, finishing fifth at 54.03, and 100 backstroke, finishing seventh at districts at 55.6 seconds.

Van Buren senior Abby Leatherman, a Bowling Green Swim Club swimmer, qualified for state after finishing fifth in the 100 breakstroke with a time of 1:09.13.

Other Division I qualifiers

Besides Madigan, Perrysburg’s Ewan Fisher qualified for state in the 200 freestyle and 500 freestyle.

Perrysburg junior Natalie Sanders qualified in the 200 freestyle and 100 freestyle and teammmate Paige Burkey will compete at state in the 100 butterfly and 100 backstroke.

Anthony Wayne swimmer Kate Hildebrand, a BGSC member, qualified for state in the 200 freestyle and 500 freestyle, setting a new school record in the 500.

In addition, Findlay swimmer Claire Kemmers, a BGSC member, qualified for state in the 200 freestyle and 500 freestyle.
