TEMPERANCE, Mich.—The Bowling Green Christian Academy’s varsity boy’s basketball team claimed its 20th win of the season with a 67-41 conquest at State Line Christian School on Thursday evening.

The victory marked the 11th straight for coach Rob Boron’s Lions dating back to December 30 and the team’s 19th win over its last 20 contests.

Senior Caleb Kunstmann led the Lion scoring attack with 15 points, 13 of which came in the first half. Senior Titus Angel chipped in 10 points, while seniors Jaydin Pinkney and Will Brose added nine apiece.

Senior John Fyfe contributed eight and classmate Brent Boston had six. Sophomores Trent Thompson (4) and Joshua Kunstmann (4), and senior Max Cobb (2) rounded out the Lion scoring production.

BG trailed, 15-13, after the opening quarter despite getting out to a 6-0 lead in the game’s first 85 seconds. Down 9-7, the Patriots went on an 8-0 run before BG was able to cut the gap to two points at the horn. Caleb Kunstmann had nine of his team’s points in the first, including a 3-pointer.

The Lions trailed by five early in the second before a Caleb Kunstmann bucket (assisted by his brother Joshua) put the squad up for good at 21-19. BGCA took a 25-21 advantage into the half-time break.

In the third, BGCA built a 9-point lead on a Pinkney triple at 5:28, but SLCS would rally and tie the score (34-34) at the 3:14 mark with a made foul shot. However, the Lions responded with a 9-0 spurt and scored 11 of the quarter’s last 13 points to take a 45-36 cushion into the final eight minutes of play.

Brose scored seven in the third, including a 3-point dagger during BG’s late quarter surge. His hoop at 1:32 put the Lions ahead by nine points (43-34) for the second time in the quarter.

It was all BGCA in the fourth stanza as the Lions poured in 22 points while holding the Patriots to just five. Fyfe and Angel each had six points in the period. The Lions scored the first eight points in the session.

SLCS ended its drought with a triple, but BGCA went on another 8-point run to lead 61-49 with 2:23 left. After a Patriot basket cut BG’s lead to 20, the Lions closed the game by scoring the last six points.

Senior Hudson Thomas set-up a season-high 14 Lion baskets, while pulling down six rebounds. He also had three steals. Angel led BGCA with 10 boards (4 offensive), and added two assists and a block, while Boston had eight rebounds and two dishes. Caleb Kunstmann paced the squad with five thefts.

SLCS, which rested two of its starters who suffered minor injuries at the Hammond (Ind.) Invitational the week prior, was led in scoring by Cooper Worley’s 22 points. Preston Roqui chipped in 13 off the bench to help the Patriot cause. Both Worley and Roqui hit three treys apiece.

BGCA, 20-3 overall, will open Independent Christian Schools of Ohio state tournament play on Thursday, Feb. 22. As the top seed in the West Division, the Lions received a bye into the quarterfinals and will play the winner of this Saturday’s second-round game between Senedot (East 7) and Anchor Christian (East 4). Senedot defeated Harvest Temple (West 5) on Thursday, 50-34.

SLCS starts tournament action in the Michigan Association of Christian Schools on Friday (Feb. 16) as the third seed in Division 1.
