A Licking County man’s road trip ended in an arrest for OVI.

On Tuesday shortly after 5 p.m., Bowling Green police were called to the area of Campbell Hill Road and East Wooster Street for a report of a vehicle leaking gasoline. The officer, upon arrival, observed an Airstream RV stopped in the northbound lane of Campbell Hill with a large amount of gasoline under the vehicle.

The officer blocked the roadway with the police cruiser.

When approached, the driver, identified as John Falzone, 67, of Newark, had slurred speech and told the officer he couldn’t figure out what was wrong with the vehicle and why it wouldn’t start, according to the Bowling Green Police Division report.

He said he had put the vehicle in park, but the parking break didn’t work.

Falzone told the officer he was looking for a gas station and seemed unaware he was parked near one. He said he had driven from Michigan, according to the report.

Once he exited the RV, the officer detected a strong odor of alcohol and Falzone was swaying back and forth while standing still.

After failing two sobriety tests, Falzone yelled he was done and began walking away at which time officers placed him under arrest, according to the report.

He was taken to the station for a breathalyzer test and his RV was searched. A half-empty bottle of vodka and half-burnt marijuana joint were found.

A dog that was in the trailer was taken to the Wood County Humane Society and his bird was taken to the BGPD until a place for it to be cared for was located.

Falzone was arrested for OVI, PAC (BAC 0.147) and OVI with a CDL. He was cited for driving an unsafe vehicle, open container and using marijuana in a vehicle.

He was taken to jail and released Wednesday on an own recognizance bond.
