The Bowling Green State University men’s basketball team continued their win streak, picking up their seventh-straight with a 79-58 victory over Siena Heights Friday at the Stroh Center.

After trailing at the half, the Falcons tallied a 51-point second half to swing the score in their favor for the final. With the win, BGSU is now 9-3 marking their best record at the holiday break since the 2004-05 season and the best record through 12 games since the 2020-21 campaign.

“It was good to achieve the win,” BGSU coach Todd Simon said. “Obviously not the start we wanted, but guys bounced back and we found our rhythm a little bit.

“I thought we were a little rushed in that first half. We’re kind of limping into break and we needed some guys to gut through it and step up with all the injuries. We did, got the win and we’re happy with what we’ve accomplished pre-Christmas.”

Individually, all five starters hit double-digit points for the Falcons for the first time since the 2018-19 season. Trey Thomas led the way with 19, hitting five from beyond the arc.

Marcus Hill contributed 15 while Jason Spurgin and P.J. Edwards each added 12. Rashaun Agee rounded out the list with 11, missing a double-double by just one rebound, finishing with nine.

Siena Heights came out firing, going 3-of-3 from behind the arc, but the Falcons hung around with Thomas logging two assists and a basket for a 9-7 tally at the first media timeout.

Jason Spurgin hit a free throw followed by a three off another feed from Thomas to knot the score at 11-11.

A free throw from Agee and a pull-up jumper from EJay Greer gave the Falcons a 14-13 advantage before a Saints basket made it a 15-14 SHU lead at the media break.

The two teams proceeded to trade points with ties at 19-19, 23-23 and 25-25 before a 4-0 burst for Siena Heights made it a 29-25 Saints lead to force a BGSU timeout.

Out of the timeout, Thomas hit a three to cut into the lead 29-28 to force a timeout from the SHU bench, eventually carrying the score into the halftime break.

Greer started the second half with two made free throws to push BGSU in front 30-29 with a 5-0 run spanning the halftime break.

The Saints added a three before Edwards went on a 5-0 run on his own, getting a layup and three to make it 35-32 at the first media timeout.

The Falcons soon put together a 9-0 run with back-to-back fastbreaks ending with an Edwards dunk and Marcus Hill acrobatic layup to make it a 44-34 BGSU lead.

The run continued for Bowling Green, stretching to 14-0 with the score at 49-34, including a monster slam by Agee.

Siena Heights used a 6-0 run to cut into the lead 54-43, but a three from Anthony McComb III halted the run at 57-43.

BGSU soon responded, logging another 14-0 run to expand their lead to 72-47 with just over four minutes left to play. Spurgin got the run started with a three followed by five straight Hill points. Thomas hit a three followed by an and-one from Hill to cap the run.

The Saints answered with a 7-0 run to trim the deficit down to 72-54, but Thomas went on a 5-0 burst of his own with another three and a layup and BGSU never looked back.

The Falcons were able to hold their advantage, securing a 79-58 victory.

With the win, the Falcons are now in the midst of a seven-game win streak, the longest since tallying eight straight during the 2019-20 campaign.

Now holding a 9-3 record, it’s the best BGSU standing at Dec. 25 since beginning the 2004-05 season with a 6-1 record at the holidays. The 9-3 record is also the best through 12 games since starting the 2020-21 season 9-3 as well.

BGSU will conclude the month of December with a 5-0 record, going undefeated in the month for the second time in the last three seasons. The five wins in the month are the most for December since winning seven in 2006-07.

As a team, BGSU tallied a season-high 11 three-pointers. Additionally, on the defensive end they recorded a season-high 16 steals. The 16 steals are the most since having 15 against Robert Morris on Dec. 19, 2021.

The Falcons recorded 50-plus points in the second to half to overcome a halftime deficit for the second straight game.

All five of Bowling Green’s starters recorded double-digit points in the game, marking the first time all BGSU starters tallied 10-plus points in the same game since March 14, 2019 in a win over Ball State.

Thomas led the Falcons in scoring for the second straight game, recording 19 against Siena Heights. After hitting six threes against Hampton, Thomas followed it up with five against the Saints.

Edwards joined in on the double-digit scoring with a career-high 12. Marcus Hill (15), Jason Spurgin (12) and Rashaun Agee (11) all hit the mark as well. Spurgin added a career-high and team-leading four steals in the contest.

With the game marking the first in program history against Siena Heights, the Falcons are now 1-0 all-time against the Saints.

The Falcons will begin the 2024 portion of the schedule as well as the conference season with their fifth and final game of the current homestand. BGSU will host Eastern Michigan on Jan. 2 to start MAC play.
