Joe Average: Christmas is about love, not Santa

0

The Christmas season is here. Advent, with all the decorations and traditions of the season. The carols and wreaths and nativity sets for all to see and enjoy.

It is a joyful time, full of love and fellowship for family and friends. That is, for those who believe, “Jesus is the reason for the season.” Santa Claus is not, although he is a part of the celebration, the giving of gifts is emblematic of God’s gift to us, His Son our Savior.

Something we too often forget about, the symbolism of gift giving.

Too often many of us are more concerned with the socializing and parties over the holidays. There is more talk and actions about those who don’t celebrate the birth of Jesus. Those who are “offended” by the decorations and even Christmas music being played in stores and restaurants. When we say, ”Merry Christmas.” it is an expression of our Faith and not intended to be offensive to people who don’t believe in Jesus. A little respect for another person’s beliefs should be the thought. With diversity and inclusion at the forefront of our society, expressions of “Merry Christmas” is customary and acceptable.

With Advent being about anticipation and preparation, let us all be respectful of this. Some of us may not believe or celebrate the season, and that is OK. But to criticize and demean those who put up decorations, sing carols, and otherwise celebrate the birth of Jesus is just not right.

Christmas is a joyous, happy season to celebrate the basis of Faith millions of Americans and billions of people worldwide. Many non-Christians recognize Christmas, though do not celebrate it. Many groups collect toys, gifts, and food for the less fortunate. Much of these are given by people who are not Christians. They see the need and help as they can. Which is the spirit of giving even for those who don’t otherwise celebrate Christmas.

With the world in turmoil, economies struggling, wars raging, division the rule rather than the exception, what we need is a little Christmas spirit, or maybe a lot of it. World leaders keep talking about the desire for peace, but little is done to promote peace. If all of us, believers and non-believers, did whatever we can to promote an attitude of peace and harmony how much better our world would be. No matter what our personal beliefs might be, shouldn’t everyone be in favor of, joy – peace – hope and love?

Merry Christmas!
