Joe Average column: Little is being done to promote good behavior

Crime problem – Joe Average 11-15-23

Crime has always been a problem, not just in our nation, but all around the world. Ever since we became “civilized.” Here in the USA it seems to be escalating to more than just a problem. It is growing and little is being done to resolve its growth. Why?

People have lost all respect for law and order. Many find it easier to steal what others have, than to work for it. I have heard the phrase, “We deserve these things.” Yeah, but only if you have worked for them. There is another phrase I have heard, “There is no free lunch.”

What we need to do is have our district attorneys and prosecutors do their job. Not “cherry pick” crimes that will make headlines and boost their careers. All crimes must go to trial and if the suspects are convicted, found guilty, they should go to jail. Laws need to be enforced, not ignored as they seem to be now. Bad behavior is never justified, no matter how hard the perpetrators claim. Too often we have seen good behavior severely criticized and bad behavior ignored.

How did this happen? Think back several years when high moral standards were taken out of our schools, and any reference to God and Jesus. Not just from schools but from any public area. It was said some people were “offended” by any reference to God and Jesus. Any thought how “offended” Christians felt by this? A constant reminder of how people should live, is a good thing. Even if some don’t believe, how can they be “offended” by this? While everyone complains about the crime rate, some complain about a reminder of good, honest behavior. Doesn’t make any sense.

When gangs loot stores, and when mobs burn down businesses, and nothing is done about it, how is this going to benefit society? It only encourages more of the same. Property loss, injuries, and deaths are not what the majority of people want. Yet little or nothing is done to promote “good behavior,” and high moral standards.

Not everyone is a Christian, or a believer in other faiths, or a believer in any faith, but how many believe violence and destruction is the way society should live? There are obviously some who believe violence and destruction are good. Then demand something should be done to repair all the damage.

As we head into the holiday season, where peace, love, joy and thankfulness are in the forefront of the news, let all of us remember and practice how to be good citizens, respect the laws and maintain good behavior.
