BGSU volleyball wins fifth straight, fourth by sweep

YPSILANTI, Mich. – The Bowling Green State University volleyball team topped the Eastern Michigan Eagles in three sets for the Falcons’ fifth straight win on Thursday.

It was the Falcons’ fourth win in a row by a three-set sweep and they now have won 13 straight sets. BGSU is now 12-11 on the season and 6-6 within the MAC.

Jaden Walz led the way for the Falcons, recording a team-high 35 assists and 10 digs for her seventh double-double of the season.

Alex Laboy nearly joined her with a team-high 13 digs and eight assists. On the attack, Kat Mandly (Perrysburg) matched her season-high for kills with 17 followed by Mia Tyler and Lauryn Hovey, both with 12. Alexis Mettille had two aces and Hovey had three blocks. Mandly also had a season-best .368 hitging percentage.

Hovey landed the first point of the match to grant BGSU a 1-0 lead, but EMU responded with a 3-0 run to move in front 3-1. The Falcons quickly answered to knot the score up at 3-3.

Toward the end of the set, two late 3-0 Bowling Green runs extended the BGSU lead and secured the first set for the Falcons.

The back-and-forth continued in the second set with another tie, this time at 22-22 and again at 23-23 and 24-24 to send the set into extra points. The Falcons were able to take the set in extra points to move ahead 2-0 for the match.

In the third set, Bowling Green rolled the 3-0 run into an 8-2 stretch that closed out the set and the match for the sweep.

The Falcons have now won seven of the last eight meetings against EMU as well as four of the last five in Ypsilanti.
