Walbridge will try again for state funding for road repaving

WALBRIDGE — Village officials will try again to obtain state funding for road paving.

At its Aug. 15 meeting, council unanimously approved a resolution authorizing the administrator to prepare and submit an application to participate in the Ohio Public Works Commission State Capital improvement and/or local transportation improvement programs.

This is the same project that the village applied for last year, to repave Walbridge Road from CSX to East Broadway Road, said Mayor Ed Kolanko.

Kleinfelder, a design and construction consultant, advised the village to apply again, Kolanko said.

He said that the project scored well last year, when it was considered by the state, but ultimately was not approved.

“They thought it would be wise to apply for the same project,” he said.

There is a 10% increase in cost.

The $383,000 would be a 50-50 match, Kolanko said. A 0% loan over 15 years is also available.

The village would also be partnering with Lake Township to do a joint application for the project.

“The road needs to be done,” Kolanko said. “It’s something we should move on.

“This doesn’t mean we’re going to get it, but we should apply.”

Kolanko also said that Lake Township has proposed fixing parts of roads that the village and township share.

These are Luckey, Ayers, Walbridge and Drouillard roads.

The cost will be about $20,000, Kolanko said.

Also at the meeting, council:

• Approved Walbridge-Fest using the Loop Park grounds and shelter house and Veterans Park, Oct. 28-30, to prepare and clean up for the Spooktacular, which will be held Oct. 29.

• Set trick or treat for Oct. 31 from 6-8 p.m.

• Heard Councilwoman Vicky Canales, who is chair of the personnel and human resources committee, ask if evaluations of five new employees had been completed. Kolanko said they will be done, in a one-on-one format, not before council in a public meeting.

“I want it be conversational,” Kolanko said. “But you’re more than welcome to have the information.”
