Joe Average column: Our nation is more divided than ever

Equality means the same – equal – but there is nothing equal about the coverage of anything that one viewpoint doesn’t like.

Everything said is highly critical of certain groups: How they are ruining our nation with their policies and beliefs. How they are dividing our nation.

We hear about unity and being a united country. But every time we hear about crime, voting rights, abortion, gun control or any of the numerous problems we are facing everyday, it is always about one side.

It seems like all talk is based on political viewpoints. One party is criticizing the other, while the other party is criticizing its critics.

How is this unity? How is this promoting equality? Where is the working together to solve problems. Why is there so much name calling? We aren’t in middle school or elementary school any more, we are adults.

The comments and accusations by one group that men — especially white men, MAGA republicans and the GOP in general — are the cause of all the problems do nothing but further divide citizens. The comments and accusations about gays, transgenders, Dems and Black and brown people also do nothing but further divide us.

The anti-Biden and anti-Trump factions are not providing any semblance of unity. Neither side is willing to talk reasonably, accusations persist and our nation is more divided than anytime in our history. We are more divided now than we were during the Civil War or the Vietnam War. Are we headed to another Civil War? Or are we in one right now? This war is not with bullets and bombs and armies, but rather with words and accusations. (Well, the bullets and bombs have been used this time as well. Just look at the crime rates.)

Everyone wants to have equality, to be treated the same, with respect for one another. But the reality is no one, or at least only a few, respect others.

There was at one time a phrase that was used, “I may disagree with you, but I respect the fact that you have an opinion different from mine. Can we agree to disagree?”

That doesn’t apply today. One side demands its viewpoints be accepted by everyone. If we don’t, we are being hateful and divisive. Mutual respect is non-existent.

So, all this talk about unity and equality is nothing more than political propaganda and grandstanding. Both political parties are guilty of this and as a result nothing is accomplished. Our representative government is in shambles.

We the people are being ignored by those who supposedly are our leaders. Special interests are running this country. False and misleading statements are common, if not the rule. And the approval ratings are, for the most part, in the negative range.

Unity and equality are what we need. It is way past time for our “leaders” to start working together the achieve this. Stop the accusations without proof, and act like the reasonably mature adults you claim to be. And by all means stop the political grandstanding.
