We are entering the Age of Endarkenment

To the Editor:

The Reagan/Gingrich/Republican war on science has evolved into a war on reason, allowing former President Donald Trump to spawn a religion of hate conceived in the womb of Christianity.

Reagan’s veto of the Fairness Doctrine enabled neoconservative disinformation to reinforce myths and conspiracy theories. Trump’s seditious effort to remain president utilizes logic similar to identifying witches as in “Monty Python and the Holy Grail.” Trump’s continued diatribes incite violence against his opposition. His “alternative facts” set new standards for propaganda.

The Republican defense of big business has led to massive lobbying efforts to protect these entities. The “swamp” is worse than it was. By allowing big business political funding, the Supreme Court guaranteed an oligarchic fascist state. Paraphrasing Mussolini, fascism is the merger of corporate and political powers.

Fossil fuel companies have invested huge sums of money to mislead the public about climate change. They engaged non-climate physicists to argue against climate change. They have also been employed by tobacco companies. Data continues to show that the predictions of actual climate scientists have come true, yet many Republicans ignore it.

Additional pollutants contribute to gender dysphoria, falling sperm counts and now feminization of male polar bears. From pesticides that seem necessary to feed the world, to overwhelming use of plastics and outright dumping of industrial waste, the number of endocrine disruptors dumped into our environment is criminal. Estrogen mimics abound forcing gender issues. Greedy CEOs try to please greedy investors. Enough is never enough.

Republican efforts to convince Ohioans (Issue 1) allowing 40% of voters to determine how 60% will live is “rule by minority.” It interjects a type of “electoral college” which subverts the will of the majority.

Around 90% of the U.S. population desire reasonable gun control, yet special interests prevent it. Political leaders should lead the public by enacting laws reflecting the needs of all citizens. Too many politicians inflame their constituency with misleading statements producing a groundswell of support to keep such politicians in power.

Trump’s refusal to accept responsibility for his actions and rejection of the will of the majority is taken directly from the dictator’s playbook. The extremely hypocritical stuffing of the Supreme Court with far-right justices attempts to force MAGA Republican ideology on everyone.

My friend says that we have entered the Age of Endarkenment. I cannot think of a better description.
