A Toledo man has pleaded guilty to attempting to cause serious physical harm to an inmate.

Michael Artal, 48, was transported from the jail Monday to the courtroom of Wood County Common Pleas Judge Molly Mack.

He was indicted in March for felonious assault, a second-degree felony, for his actions at the jail on Feb. 22.

Artal pleaded guilty to the amended charge of attempted felonious assault, a third-degree felony. In exchange, the state would not indict him for illegal conveyance of drugs into the jail in January, said Wood County Assistant Prosecuting Attorney Lara Rump.

Rump said deputies at the sheriff’s office on Feb. 22 responded to the jail for a report on an unconscious inmate.

The inmate was transported to the hospital, Rump said.

A review of video cameras showed Artal in a physical altercation and showed him striking the other inmate multiple times with his fist and knees, she said.

Mack said she could impose a jail sentence of nine-36 months or place Artal on community control for up to five years.

Sentencing was set for Sept 18.
