Elmwood accepts teacher resignation — its last for this year

BLOOMDALE – Elmwood Local Schools has accepted one last resignation, but any additional ones may not be approved.

At Monday’s meeting, the board of education accepted the letter of resignation from third grade teacher Kalista Thain, effective Aug. 10.

Superintendent Tony Borton said the 10th was the last day teachers could resign without penalty, and he may not recommend for approval any additional requests.

“At this point, we need to start locking staff down,” he said.

Any teacher who resigns without board approval may have their license held by the Ohio Department of Education, he said.

Borton said in the past the district has had a couple of teachers leave in August, but that was allowed because he was able to fill the positions.

In his legislative report, Borton said the state is going back to grades PK-8 and 6-12 teaching licenses and made permanent the ability to hire substitute teachers who do not have a degree as long as they successfully complete a background check.

Also at the meeting, the board:

• Accepted donations of two microscopes with video monitors and cameras, and a weight scale, valued at $4,600 from Berry Global for the seventh and eighth grade science departments; $250 from Wayne United Methodist Church for the student lunch program; and $250 from Amplex for elementary student supply kits.

• Learned all offices are scheduled to reopen to the public Aug. 1.

• Scheduled a work session at 8:30 a.m. on Aug. 7 and for 5:30 p.m. on Sept. 5.
