Get gas cap tested for free with TMACOG

Free gas cap testing at four events this month will allow people throughout Northwest Ohio andsoutheast Michigan to confirm that their vehicles aren’t contributing to additional ozonepollution due to a leaky gas cap.

In addition to increasing harmful emissions, a broken or missing gas cap can reducefuel efficiency by 1-2% and cost up to a full tank of gas each year throughevaporation.

Older vehicles are more likely to have a poorly sealed cap, but any vehicle could beleaking. A loose gas cap may trigger the check engine light, so if the light turns onrandomly or right after fueling, the cap may need to be replaced.

Toledo Metropolitan Area Council of Governments staff will perform a quick compression test to make sure the gas cap has atight seal. If the gas cap has a leak, you are eligible to receive a free replacement.

Gas cap testing will be offered from 10 a.m.-1 p.m. at the following locations:

• Wednesday, July 19: Bowling Green State University (Lot 13, WoosterStreet and Alumni Drive, near Doyt Perry Stadium)

• Thursday, July 20: Westgate Village (3450 Central Ave., Toledo)

• Wednesday, July 26: Perrysburg Junior High (550 E. South Boundary St., back parking lot)

• Thursday, July 27: Monroe Community College (Whitman Center, 7777 Lewis Ave., Temperance, Michigan)
