Erika Porter from Baylor joins BGSU women’s basketball

Bowling Green State University women’s basketball coach Fred Chmiel has announced the addition of Erika Porter.

Porter, who joins the Falcons after spending the 2022-23 season at Baylor University, has two seasons of eligibility remaining.

“We are excited to welcome Erika to BGSU,” said Chmiel. “She brings in a wealth of experience, athleticism and size.

“Erika is a great competitor who will have an impact on the whole program.”

Porter, a 6-0 forward, played in 15 games for the Bears last season as the Bears went 20-13. She had a season-high five rebounds on two occasions, and had a season-best six points against both Incarnate Word and Oklahoma. Porter played a season-high 18 minutes against Houston Christian, grabbing five boards in that win.

Prior to Baylor, Porter spent two seasons at the University of Illinois, playing in a total of 40 games As a freshman in 2020-21, she saw action in 17 contests, making two starts and shooting 52.4 percent from the field. She ranked second on the team in blocked shots.

As a sophomore in the 2022-23 campaign, Porter played in 23 games and made 12 starts for the Illini. She averaged 4.2 points and 2.3 boards in 13.0 minutes per game.

Porter led the team in blocks in that ‘22-23 campaign, and again shot over 50% from the field (52.2%). She scored a career-high 15 points in Illinois’ win over Wisconsin in the opening round of the 2022 Big Ten Tournament.

A native of West Windsor, New Jersey, Porter earned four letters at Notre Dame High School, where she helped lead the Irish to four-straight Colonial Valley Conference titles and a 76-30 record. Porter was named to the All-CVC First Team and won back-to-back CVC-Player-of-the-Year honors in each of her final two seasons.

Porter, who also earned Trentonian All-Area First-Team honors in each of her last two seasons, recorded totals of 1,405 points and 792 rebounds in her high-school career. She averaged 13.3 ppg and 7.5 rpg during those four years, reaching double figures in scoring 72 times and posting 31 career double-doubles.

The daughter of Joseph Porter III and Janice Porter, she has an older sister, Alexis.
