PEMBERVILLE — Council has passed an ordinance that will add a $15 additional tax on each motor vehicle registered in the village.

At last week’s meeting, council voted unanimously to pass the ordinance that adds the permissive tax.

The ordinance received its first reading at council’s April 6 meeting.

The tax will start being collected Jan. 1.

The text of the ordinance states the village was seeking the fees as a supplemental source of revenue for the village.

According to a spokesperson for the Ohio Department of Public Safety, the agency of which the Bureau of Motor Vehicles is a part, the tax cannot be collected this year.

“The soonest (the additional tax) could be collected is Jan. 1 of next year,” said Beth Snyder. “To collect the tax this year, (the ordinance) would have had to be passed no later than Dec. 31 of last year.”

When the tax becomes effective, the BMV will collect the additional tax automatically.

“When a resident walks into any BMV office in the state and they give a Pemberville address that is inside the village limits, our computers will automatically add the (additional) tax,” Snyder said.

Residents who live outside the village limits who have a Pemberville address will not have to pay the additional tax.

“(The tax) will not apply to residents who do not live within the village,” Snyder said. “It only applies to people who live inside the village.”

Council member Pat Rollins was absent for the meeting, which had a light agenda.

Council members also gave a third reading and then unanimously voted to pass another ordinance that updates the village’s portion of a Wood County Solid Waste District plan.

The update is required every five years by Ohio law and the Ohio Environmental Protection Agency, and Pemberville is part of the minimum of 60 percent of the Waste District’s coverage area, which is required for the plan. The waste district covers approximately 80% of the county’s population.

The plan covers a 16-year period, from 2023-39, and utilizes the year 2020 as the reference year.

The plan also describes current and future recycling activities and programs, including those services and programs for residential, commercial, and industrial sectors of the county.

The village will incur no additional cost to be part of the plan update.

In other business, council members were encouraged to attend and assist with the upcoming Party in the Park, which is slated for Sunday from 1-5 p.m.

The next council meeting is July 18. Due to the July 4th holiday, no council meeting will be held.
