A Toledo man who failed to appear for sentencing of sex crimes in Wood County and was apprehended in Mexico remains in jail.

Jonathon Jones, 33, appeared via video from the jail Thursday in the courtroom of Wood County Common Pleas Judge Joel Kuhlman.

He was arraigned on charges of failure to appear and vandalism and pleaded not guilty to both.

In March, Jones pleaded guilty in Wood County Common Pleas Court to endangering children and attempting to commit pandering obscenity, both third-degree felonies.

He failed to appear at his sentencing hearing on May 4 and a nationwide warrant was issued.

Defense attorney Lawrence Gold said his client has contacted two consulates and is in the process of denouncing his citizenship.

“It’s in flux at this time,” he said. “But at this point he is still an American citizen for the purposes of these proceedings.”

Jones faces six-18 months for the failure to appear charge, which is a fourth-degree felony, and six-12 months for the vandalism charge, which is a fifth-degree felony.

Gold said his client may potentially change his plea at the next court date, which was set for Aug 3.

That is the same date he is scheduled to be sentenced for the endangering children and pandering charges.

Kuhlman set bond at $200,000 after determining Jones poses a flight risk.

Jones was arrested May 8 in Ahumada, Chihuahua, Mexico, while traveling with a 17-year-old who was reported missing to Canton police on April 11.

Jones has been charged in Sylvania Municipal Court with aggravated murder in the death of his mother, 53-year-old Nicole Jones.

The teenage girl is facing juvenile aggravated murder charges.

The murder allegedly occurred before the two fled to Mexico.
