Perrysburg downs Ashland 10-3, advances to district

PERRYSBURG — Perrysburg fell behind 2-0 going into the bottom of the third, but rallied to defeat Ashland, 10-3, to propel the Yellow Jackets to next week’s Division I district tournament.

The Yellow Jackets scored three runs in the bottom of the third inning, adding one run in the fourth, two in the fifth, and four in the sixth inning. Perrysburg only outhit Ashland, 11-10, but took advantage of miscues in the field by the Arrows.

Perrysburg advances to take on Toledo Start, 7-4 winners over Sylvania Northview, in a district semifinal at Bowman Park in West Toledo next Tuesday at 6 p.m.

In Wednesday’s win, Maison Gerrard started in the circle for Perrysburg, striking out six, walking one, and allowing nine hits and three runs, including two home runs by the Arrows, through 6.1 innings.

Maddie Von Sacken closed, striking out, walking none, and allowing one hit and no runs through one inning.

At the plate, Hayley Griggs was 3-for-3 with a triple, scoring three runs, Ella Leonard was 2-for-3 with a double and three RBIs, and Morgan Hoverman was 2-for-4 with an RBI, scoring twice.

Gerrard, Cassie Plummer, Lexie Vaillant, and Yesenia You had base hits for Perrysburg. Vaillant and Alyssa Bradford had sacrifice bunts and Leonard had a sacrifice fly. Hoverman, Jess Miller, Griggs and Bradford had stolen bases.

For Ashland, Makaree Chapman took the loss in the circle after striking out three, walking one, allowing 11 hits and 10 runs, but only seven were earned thanks to five Ashland errors.

Chapman was 2-for-4 with a home run and two RBIs, Hailey Lang was 4-for-4 with a home run and RBI, Madison Hoffman was 2-for-4 with a double, Keagan Slater doubled, and Miley Baker had a base hit. Gracie Ellis reached after getting hit by a pitch.
