Adopt a dog: Fee waived at Wood County shelter event

A one-day adoption event to be held at the Wood County Dog Shelter on Sunday from 11 a.m.-3 p.m.

To encourage adoptions, the dog adoption fee of $75 will be waived for the one-day event.

Adopters will still be required to purchase a 2023 Wood County Dog License for $14 at the time of adoption. Adopters will also leave the Shelter with a 2023 Dog Park Membership and a goodie bag for their new family member.

This event is in recognition of National Adopt-a-Shelter-Pet Day, celebrated on April 30, to help raise awareness for the thousands of animals waiting for their forever homes in shelters across the nation.

Perrysburg Arbor Day Celebration is Friday

PERRYSBURG — The City of Perrysburg will celebrate Arbor Day on Friday at 2 p.m. with the planting of a Swamp White Oak tree at Rotary Community Park.

The celebration will be led by the city’s Street Tree Commission and will include a proclamation by Mayor Tom Mackin, remarks from the Country Garden Club, and a presentation of the winning Arbor Day banners created by students at St. Rose School and in the Perrysburg School District. The banners will be put on display on the light posts in downtown Perrysburg.

Perrysburg is also celebrating its 39th year of being named a Tree City USA by the National Arbor Foundation, and the 25th year for receiving the Growth Award for its work in educating the public about the benefits of street trees in the community.

Owens hosts BIG Read author Stephanie Foo

PERRYSBURG — Owens Community College will host Stephanie Foo to discuss her book, “What My Bones Know,” the 2022-23 BIG Read Selection, on Thursday at 10 a.m. in the Center for Fine and Performing Arts theater.

Foo’s discussions, both in-person and virtual, will wrap up a year of activities, discussions and programs surrounding her book.

Foo’s book explores the science and psychology behind Complex PTSD through the lens of her own personal narrative. “What My Bones Know” is a book Foo herself said she wished she had when she was first diagnosed with Complex PTSD. In 2022, Foo’s book was named “One of the Best Books of the Year (so far)” by Amazon, named on the NPR “Books We Love” list and was one of Apple’s best 20 audiobooks for the year.

Foo will be on the Findlay campus at 3:30 p.m. in the Education Center Room 111.
