BGSU basketball adds transfer Jason Spurgin

The Bowling Green State University men’s basketball program and head coach Todd Simon announced the signing of Jason Spurgin on Wednesday.

Spurgin, a 6-foot-11 center, will join the Falcons after spending the last three seasons at Southern Utah. A native of Toowoomba, Australia, Spurgin has started all 72 games for the Thunderbirds since the start of the 2021-22 campaign, helping lead the team to 47 wins during that time. During his three years at SUU, Spurgin aided the Thunderbirds to a .698 win percentage with a record of 67-29.

“Jason is a game changer for the BGSU program,” Simon said. “His leadership and will to win will be felt day one. Additionally, he’s a skilled and athletic big that we can move around the court offensively. On the defensive end, his ability to block shots and help will impact our defense immediately. He has been a critical piece to our success the past three seasons and we are excited to have him here.”

During the 2022-23 season, Spurgin finished first on the Thunderbirds and second in the WAC in blocks for the year with 63. He averaged 10.0 points per game while shooting 60.1 percent from the field and added 6.0 rebounds per game. Sprugin tallied a season-high 20 points twice on the season, doing so against Sacramento State and California Baptist. He also hauled in a career-high 17 rebounds and scored 16 points against North Alabama.

As for the 2021-22 season, Spurgin played in all 35 games for Southern Utah, averaging 5.2 rebounds per game which was 15th in the Big Sky Conference. Spurgin paced the Thunderbirds in blocks with 29 on the season. His best game from the field came against Northern Colorado, scoring a career-high 22 points. He recorded 15 points and 14 rebounds against Montana and was named Big Sky All-Academic.

As a freshman, Spurgin appeared in 14 games for the Thunderbirds and was named Big Sky All-Academic. Prior to arriving at Southern Utah, Spurgin went to Toowoomba Grammar School where he was a two-time captain of the basketball team.

Sprugin is the second player to sign with the Falcons this offseason, joining guard P.J. Edwards from UCF.
