Lake softball’s 4-run rally beats Comets, 6-5

MILLBURY – Lake scored four runs in the bottom of the eighth inning to come from behind and defeat Genoa, 6-5, in Northern Buckeye Conference softball Monday.

After the two teams were tied 2-2 at the conclusion of seven innings, Genoa scored three in the top of the eighth before the Flyers came back to win.

Lake improves to 12-3 overall and 5-2 in the league, while Genoa falls to 8-6 and 5-2.

Lake pitcher Kali Bedford got the win, striking out eight, walking two, and allowing eight hits and five runs over eight innings. She threw 112 pitchers, including 74 strikes, while facing 34 batters.

Jessie Materni led Lake at the plate, going 2-for-4 with a double and two RBIs, Bedford and Sophia Gruetter had doubles, and Alivia King and Ellie Rymers had base hits.

Sarah Patrick had a sacrifice bunt, and Rymers and Addison Boehm had stolen bases for the Flyers.

For the Comets, Kaylin Shields struck out 16, walked three, and allowed six hits, but only four of the six runs scored were charged against her. She threw 124 pitches, including 91 strikes.

The Comets, which outhit the Flyers 8-6, were led at the plate by Victoria Plantz, who was 3-for-4 with two doubles and two RBIs.

Shields was 2-for-4 with a stolen base and Emerson Bickel, Maddie Bronowski, and Courtney Chapinski had base hits for the Comets. Bickel had two stolen bases, Marin Butler had one SB plus Butler reached after getting hit by a pitch.
