Eastwood wrestling coach Joe Wyant is retiring as head wrestling coach after spending 21 years at Eastwood and the previous 28 at Lakota.

Wyant was 273-105 in dual meets as a head coach and been part of 665 dual wins plus 19 conference titles, including as an assistant coach.

He coached 123 state qualifiers and 59 state placers. Wyant was inducted into the Ohio High School Wrestling Coaches Hall of Fame in 2016.

“We thank coach Wyant for all of his years of coaching wrestling not only here at Eastwood but overall and thank him for his commitment to Eastwood athletics,” Eastwood athletic director Jeff Hill said in a statement.

Wyant remains as head softball coach at Eastwood. Hill says the search for a new head wrestling coach has begun.

For the last few years, Wyant has been the head coach of three varsity sports — football at Gibsonburg and wrestling and softball at Eastwood.

“I like being around the kids,” Wyant once told media. “They make me feel younger, they keep me competitive, and I enjoy seeing kids winning and getting better.”

Cotterman hired

Eastwood has hired Sam Cotterman to be its next head football coach, replacing Craig Rutherford, an Eastwood graduate who has moved on to become an assistant coach at Anthony Wayne.

Cotterman has 16 years of experience at the high school level as an assistant coach at Perrysburg, where he coached both the offensive and defensive lines.

He also served as an assistant at his alma mater, the University of Findlay, where he was a four-year starter as a player.

Cotterman was also the head wrestling coach at Perrysburg from 2010-17, where his teams won seven Northern Lakes League titles and he was the Ohio Coach of the Year in 2014. He is a graduate of Elmwood High School.
