A Columbus man has been arrested for assault after allegedly punching two downtown bar personnel.

On April 10 at 11:02 p.m., Bowling Green police responded to a report of a person refusing to leave a bar located in the 100 block of East Wooster Street.

Dispatch then advised the man had left the bar and was heading east on East Wooster.

While westbound on East Wooster, an officer observed a pedestrian had stumbled off the sidewalk and into the eastbound lane of travel. The pedestrian matched the description of the man provided by the bar, according to the Bowling Green Police Division report.

The man refused to identify himself and appeared to be intoxicated. The man continued to be uncooperative as the officer attempted to place him in handcuffs and then became dead weight as an attempt was made to place him in a cruiser.

While traveling to the jail, the man, who was later identified as Patrick Callahan, allegedly yelled racist comments toward the officer and made threatening remarks. He had to be dragged to the cell by his arms because he refused to move on his own, according to the police report.

Officers spoke with bar personnel who told police they were kicked and punched by Callahan when they tried to remove him from the bar. They said they did not want to file charges. Both had small abrasions, according to the report.

Callahan, 37, was charged with two counts of assault, obstructing official business and failure to yield the right of way.

He was taken to jail and released April 14 on an own recognizance bond. He is to have no contact with the alleged victims or to return to the bar where the alleged assaults occurred. This police report was made available on Monday.
