BG Arts Council president speaks at Exchange Club

Robin Stanton Gerrow, president of the Bowling Green Arts Council, will describe new things the group is doing to work with local artists as guest speaker at Tuesday’s meeting of the Bowling Green Exchange Club.

The council works with area organizations to co-sponsor events that enrich the community, provide inspiration, enjoyment and learning opportunities and showcase the abilities of many talented area artists.

Gerrow is serving her first year as president. Among upcoming activities is an Art Walk on May 13.

Exchange Club meetings take place at noon on Tuesdays in the Bowling Green Country Club. Members of the public are invited to attend and enjoy a buffet lunch as well as the presentation. No reservations are necessary.

Gerrow is a founding partner of Gerrow Communications, located in Bowling Green. Previously she was associate vice president of university communications at the University of Texas at El Paso. Prior to that, served as chief of communications at Bowling Green State University.

Show Me the Movie at Way library: ‘Ticket to Paradise’

PERRYSBURG — Join the Way Public Library, 101 E. Indiana Ave., on Tuesday at 2 p.m. for a free showing of “Ticket to Paradise.”

A man (George Clooney) and his ex-wife (Julia Roberts) race to Bali, Indonesia, to stop their daughter (Kaitlyn Dever) from marrying a seaweed farmer (Maxime Bouttier). As they try to sabotage the wedding, they soon find themselves rekindling old feelings that once made them happy together. This film is rated PG-13.

Who owns and maintains a ditch? Questions answered at forum

The Wood Soil and Water Conservation District is hosting a landowner ditch maintenance question-and-answer session on Tuesday at 7 p.m. at the Middleton Township Building, 21745 N. Dixie Hwy.

Jim Carter, Wood SWCD ditch technician, and Duane Abke, Wood County Engineer’s Office drainage construction coordinator, will present on the necessity of maintaining ditches and waterways. They will discuss who owns the ditches, who is to maintains the ditches, and who is responsible for the cost. The event is free and open to the community.

Kiwanis Club hears from writer in residence

The Bowling Green Kiwanis will meet on Thursday at the Wood County Senior Center, 140 S Grove St. The public is welcome. The meeting starts at noon and lunch is available starting at 11:30 a.m.

This week the club welcomes Marianne Jungmaier, Max Kade Writer in Residence at Bowling Green State University. Her topic will be From Austria to the World: Novels, Poems and Stories.

Jungmaier was born in Linz, Austria. After studying journalism and media and working as a literary editor, translator and video editor, she became a freelance author and artist in 2011. She works in language, collage and photography. She has published two novels, three books of poetry and a book of short stories.

Research, readings and residencies have taken her to many countries, including India, Pakistan, Italy, Germany, Iceland, Scotland, Nepal, Serbia, Brazil and Czechia. Her prize-winning debut novel “Das Tortenprotokoll (The Cake Protocol),” which appeared in 2015, tells of a young woman who returns from the city to her small village for her grandmother’s funeral, only to discover a family secret.

Aktion Club to host honors banquet

GRAND RAPIDS — The Aktion Club of Wood County Board of Development Disabilities will host the 2023 Community Honors Awards Banquet on Friday from 6-9 p.m. at Nazareth Hall. Nazareth Hall, 21211 W. River Road.

The Community Honors Award Banquet is a night of recognition to honor community members, individuals served, and employees of Wood County Board of Developmental Disabilities for their achievements, dedication and support to the developmental disabilities community of Wood County.

Browse books at library’s spring book sale

The Wood County District Public Library Friends of the Library will have a spring book sale in Meeting Room A&B at the library, 251 N. Main St.

The book sale will be: Friends Member Exclusive Pre-sale on Thursday from 5-8 p.m., Friday from 9 a.m. -5:30 p.m., April 22 from 9 a.m.-4:30 p.m. and April 23 from 1-4:30 p.m.

Bring a Friends of the Library bag and fill it for $10. Bags will also be available for purchase for $10.

Prices: Hardback books – $2 each or $5 for three; paperback books – 50 cents each (all types); children’s books – 50 cents each (all types); coffee table books – $3 each; CDs – $2 each or $5 for three; DVDs – $2 each or $5 for three.

Celebrate Earth Day in BG

The 11th Annual Community Earth Day Celebration will be held on April 22 from 2-4 p.m. This free family event is open to all and is filled with fun hands-on learning stations.

The Montessori School of Bowling Green, 515 Sand Ridge Road, provides an ideal backdrop for this Earth Day Celebration. Enjoy 14 acres of land and spend some time at the Black Swamp Preserve and Slippery Elm Trail.

Plant a sunflower with BGSU, make a solar pizza box oven with the Conneaut K-Kids, take a nature walk with the Bowling Green Parks & Recreation Department, power a light bulb with the City of Bowling Green’s power generating bicycle, learn about trees with the city’s arborist, and give the Wood County Park District’s giant Earth Ball a roll.

Come early, bring a bike, and enjoy a slow roll along the Slippery Elm Bike Trail with the Bowling Green Bike Safety Commission. This ride will begin in the Montessori School Parking Lot at noon.

Call for artists: Jazz, art fest in G. Rapids set for Aug. 13

GRAND RAPIDS — The annual Sunset Jazz and Art Festival sponsored by the Grand Rapids Arts Council will be held Aug. 13 from 2 p.m. until sunset along the towpath of the Maumee River. Rain date for the event is Aug. 20. This event will feature jazz performances, a juried art show and sale, food and beverages.

Visual artists wishing to participate will be asked to submit three photos displaying close-ups of their work by July 10. All work must be original and hand-produced by the entrant. Artists will be selected by a panel of judges consisting of art educators and members of the Grand Rapids community.

Due to space restrictions, the number of participants will be limited. They will be provided a 10 feet by 10 feet space to each. Exhibitors must furnish their own tables, chairs, display materials and tents, if desired. There will be a $50 fee per booth. For an application, call 419-206-1512 or email [email protected].
