Prep softball roundup: Milligan belts walk-off homer as Royals down Rams, 7-6

BLOOMDALE — Senior Maddie Milligan hit a walk off solo home run in the bottom of the 10th with two outs to propel Elmwood to a 7-6 non-league victory over visiting Upper Sandusky Thursday.

The game saw 25 hits, including 13 by Upper Sandusky and 12 by Elmwood.

The Rams scored five runs in the top of the second and one in the top of the fourth to grab a 6-0 lead, but Elmwood gradually crawled back, scoring two in the fourth, three in the fifth, and one in the seventh to tie the game and force extra innings.

Milligan, who will play NCAA Division II softball at Ashland University, was 3-for-5 and along with her game-winning HR also hit a double and had three RBIs.

Milligan also got the win in the circle, striking out 15, walking one, allowing 13 hits and only one of six runs scored by the Rams was earned. She threw 157 pitches, including 113 strikes, facing 45 batters.

Elmwood senior Kennadie Plouck was 3-for-4, senior Abigail Alllison was 2-for-3 with an RBI, senior Kynzie Science had a base hit and two RBIs, and junior Kate Keiffer, sophomore Dakota Rader-King, and senior Cara Frank had base hits for the Royals.

Science, who will play next year at Owens Community College, had a sacrifice fly and Allison reached after getting hit by a pitch.

Bowling Green 3, Maumee 2

Bowling Green softball scored two runs in the bottom of the tenth inning to defeat Maumee, 3-2, in a Northern Lakes League game Thursday.

BG (4-3) scored in the bottom of the first, the Panthers tied in the top half of the third, and neither team scored again until the Panthers put up a run in the top of the 10th.

But the Bobcats countered with two, including the walk-off game-winner, when they got to the plate.

“We knew we could get those runs across, we just knew we had to get it done,” BG coach Cassie Nauman said.

“They scored one run in that last inning and that kind of gave us the push that we needed to get the job done.”

Sophomore Zoe Ziems got the win in the circle for BG, striking out six, walking one, allowing eight hits, but of Maumee’s two runs, neither were earned. Ziems threw 120 pitches, including 92 strikes, facing 40 batters through 10 innings.

BG junior Brynn Wilhelm hit a triple and junior Samantha Trimpey, seniors Meghan Kramp and Sarah Konecny and freshman Lillian Wilkie had base hits.

Senior Ella Manley and Cassidy Kroggel, Kramp and Wilkie were hit by a pitch, Trimpey had two stolen bases and Konecny had one SB and an RBI.

Maumee pitcher Hannah Ruiz took the loss in the circle, despite striking out 14, walking two, allowing five hits and just one earned run through 9.2 innings. She threw 130 pitches, including 84 for strikes, facing 38 batters.

Autumn Miller was 2-for-4 with a double and RBI and Haley Hughes, Danielle Schriner, Autumn Gugger, Ruiz, and Skyler Janes had base hits for the Panthers. Ruiz and Miller had sacrifice bunts and Gugger had a stolen base.

Perrysburg 10, Fairdale (Ky.) 2

COCOA BEACH, Fla. — Perrysburg scored six runs in the first innings and outhit Fairdale (Kentucky), 13-1, on their way to a 10-2 victory during the Yellow Jackets’ spring trip Wednesday.

Sophomore Bella Click pitched for Perrysburg, striking out 14, walking three, allowing one hit and no earned runs in seven innings. Click threw 108 pitches, including 67 strikes, while facing 27 batters.

Freshman Maddie Von Sacken was 3-for-3 with a double, sacrifice fly, scored three runs and had two RBIs for Perrysburg.

Junior Paige Riney was 4-for-4 with a double, and four RBIs and freshmen Yesenia You and Morgan Hoverman were both 2-for-5 for the Jackets. Freshman Sophie Halm had Perrysburg’s only stolen base.

Dailey Hicks had Fairdale’s only base hit, Gracie Smithson had a stolen base, and Kyllie Key took the loss in the circle.

Oak Harbor 4, Lake 2

OAK HARBOR — Lake softball suffered its first loss of the season, falling to 4-1, after losing on the road to Oak Harbor, 4-2, Thursday.

Oak Harbor pitcher Alyse Sorg limited Lake to four hits, including a double by senior Jessie Materni and base hits by sophomore Sarah Patrick, junior Alivia King and freshman Sophia Gruetter.

Lake scored in the top of the fourth to tie the game at 2-2, but Oak Harbor added single runs in the bottom of the fourth and sixth innings while holding the Flyers off the board.

Sorg struck out five, walked four, allowed four hits and no earned runs through seven innings. Sophomore Kali Bedford pitched for Lake, striking out three, walking one, allowing 10 hits and three earned runs through six.

Sophomore Diem Isbell, who reached twice on walks, had two stolen bases and Gruetter had one for the Flyers. Sophomores Addison Boehm and Kylee Pietrzak had sacrifice bunts.

The Rockets, which improved to 7-1, were led at the plate by Emily Sommers, who was 3-for-4 with a double and RBI, Ava Geyer was 3-for-3, and Sorg hit a double and had two RBIs.

Hannah Schimmoeller, Hannah Perry, and Karder Haas had base hits for the Rockets.
