Wood County Democrats meet

The Wood County Democratic Party will meet Thursday at 7 p.m. at the Simpson Garden Park Building, 1291 Conneaut Ave.

Local candidates will be on hand, and the group will discuss the proposed constitutional amendment to enshrine reproductive freedom and abortion rights in the Ohio Constitution. There will also be petitions to sign and circulate. Everyone is welcome.

Fish for lunch and dinner on Friday at VFW Post 1148

A lake perch dinner will be served Friday from 3-7:30 p.m. at VFW Post 1148 at 719 S. Main St.

It includes four pieces, scalloped potatoes and pasta salad and costs $13.50.

For the same price, get six shrimp with the sides above.

Apple blossoms will be available for $2.50. This is dine-in or carryout and open to the public.

Lunch will be from 11:30 a.m.-1 p.m. It is a lake perch sandwich and fries.

Girl Scout Spring Break Day Camp in BG

Girl Scout Spring Break Day Camp is set for April 11-12 from 9 a.m.-3 p.m. at First Presbyterian Church, 126 S. Church St.

The camp is for girls in grades K-5 who are not currently members.

969 pinwheels a sign of Child Abuse Awareness; ‘planting’ is April 12 at BG church

April is Child Abuse Awareness Month and the staff of Wood County Children Services will hold their annual Pinwheel for Prevention events on April 12.

The day begins at 9 a.m. with the planting of 969 pinwheels at First United Methodist Church, 1528 E. Wooster St. The 969 pinwheels represent the number of investigations completed and families assisted in 2022.

Following the pinwheel planting, a luncheon and silent auction will be held from 11:30 a.m.-1:30 p.m. at the Wood County Courthouse, Alvin L. Perkins Atrium, One Courthouse Square. Food and beverages will be available for purchase, along with silent auction basket raffles.

Pemberville business participating in blanket fundraiser

PEMBERVILLE — Ortinau Art LLC is holding a blanket fundraiser.

For every blanket that is sold, another one will be printed a donated to #WarmHearts, https://www.oliviaswarmhearts.org/, so they can be donated to the homeless community in the Toledo area.

Go birding with BG Parks and Rec

A Friday Morning Birding program will be held this spring with Bowling Green Parks and Recreation.

Join in on Fridays from April 14-May 19 at 8 a.m. for a hike around Wintergarden Park and explore local birds.

Adult birder watchers of all ability levels are welcome. Binoculars and field guides are available for those who do not have their own. Hikes will last up to 90 minutes. No pre-registration is required and participants can come to one or all of the meetings as schedules permit. Wear weather appropriate clothing and shoes that allow for walking on the trails.

Tea & Talk Series: You Can’t Play Ball in a Skirt

The Wood County Museum welcomes Bette Lou Higgens, Eden Valley Enterprises, as the guest speaker for the upcoming Tea & Talk Series on April 20 at 2 p.m. at the Wood County Museum, 13660 County Home Road.

Bette Lou’s tea is titled “You Can’t Play Ball In a Skirt” a discussion about Alta Weiss, and how she put herself through medical school playing professional baseball on a men’s team in the early 1900s.

The museum is partnering with The Summer Kitchen. The featured tea selection is called “Mango & Friends” a fruit tea with extra-large cubes and flakes of pineapple and mango.

Help clean up Perrysburg parks

PERRYSBURG — Volunteers are needed for the annual spring cleanup of city parks.

Each year, volunteers take part in the Great American Cleanup by picking up litter at various locations. This year, the city is teaming up with Partners for Clean Streams to clean four parks. Volunteers are needed at these locations on the following dates and times:

April 22 (Earth Day), Woodlands and Three Meadows Parks, 9-11 a.m.

April 30, Orleans and Rivercrest Parks, 2:30-4:30 p.m.

Gloves, tools, safety vests and trash bags will be provided. Volunteers are encouraged to wear long pants, weather appropriate clothing, as well as comfortable and closed-toed shoes.

Volunteers are welcome to show up at any of the locations on the day of the cleanup, but registration is encouraged. Discover the past’s stories with a tour of library’s local history collection

Learn about Wood County history with a tour of the Wood County District Public Library’s Local History Collection on April 17 at 2 p.m. in meeting room A&B at the library, 251 N. Main St.

Local History Librarian Marnie Pratt will lead this tour that will give an overview of some of the resources available from the library.

Protect your piggy bank with Weiss Financial Ratings at the library

The Wood County District Public Library offers Weiss Financial Ratings as a new database that users can access for free with a library card.

Learn more about this resource on April 18 at 2 p.m. in Meeting Room C at the library, 251 N. Main St., as Tom Kilkenny from Weiss Financial Ratings hosts a webinar to show the functionality of the database and how to create an account, set up a watchlist for a bank, insurance company, stocks and mutual funds, how to create research tools, and how to run a Medigap report.

Weiss Financial Ratings offers independent, unbiased financial strength ratings of banks, credit unions, insurance companies, and conservative buy-and-sell investment ratings of thousands of stocks, mutual funds, and exchange-traded funds. Set up a personal account to create a watchlist and get upgrade/downgrade notifications. For those on Medicare, there is also a tool to help evaluate the available Medicare Supplement Insurance plans and make sure to get the best price.

Families invited to Spring Fling

A Spring Fling Family Fair will be held April 19 from 5-7:30 p.m. At First United Methodist Church, 1526 E. Wooster St.

The goal of this Wood County Family and Children First Council event is to bring community resources to families and capitalize on the importance of positive family time.

There will be vendors, pizza, popcorn, nachos and snow cones, along with carnival games and activities and prize raffles.

Black Swamp Quilters Guild host festival

The Black Swamp Quilters Guild will host the Quilts and Needle Arts Festival at the Wood County Fairgrounds Pratt Pavilion, 13800 W. Poe Road Sept. 21-23.

It will feature hundreds of quilts, a Quilt of Valor presentation, demonstrations and quilting bee, antique quilts, drawings and gift baskets, vendors and challenge quilt competition
