Fremont man sentenced for resisting arrest

A Fremont man who fled police has pleaded guilty to resisting arrest.

Logan Johnson, 20, appeared Thursday in the courtroom of Wood County Common Pleas Judge Joel Kuhlman.

He pleaded guilty to resisting arrest and improperly handling firearms in a motor vehicle.

On Oct. 7, the vehicle Johnson was driving was stopped for a traffic violation in the 3400 block of Libbey Road in Perrysburg.

He told Lake Township police officers multiple stories about where he was coming from and heading to, said Wood County Assistant Prosecuting Attorney Morgan Spitler.

Johnson was seated in a police cruiser while the consent search of his vehicle was being conducted, subsequently leading to the discovery of several firearms.

The officer opened the cruiser’s door and told Johnson he was being taken into custody and tried to place him in handcuffs. At the point, Johnson fled the area. He was located after a brief search.

A loaded SCCY CPX-2 9 mm handgun and loaded Walther .380 handgun were found in such a manner where they were accessible to the operator or passenger without having to leave the vehicle. The SCCY was under Johnson’s seat and had a round in the chamber, ready to fire.

A loaded Smith & Wesson M&P-15 was found in the trunk.

Kuhlman ordered the guns be forfeited.

Defense attorney Ken Sobran said his client knows he made bad decisions.

“He did run. They were scared,” he said.

There were two additional occupants in the vehicle.

Johnson did ultimately stop, he said.

“I don’t think you’ll ever see him again,” Sobran said,

Kuhlman imposed a sentence of two years on community control.

He told Johnson that if he hadn’t stopped and turned himself in, there would have been a different result.

Charges of escape and two additional counts of improperly handling firearms in a motor vehicle were dismissed.
