ARCHBOLD — An individual was found dead and several residents were displaced following a fire in an Archbold apartment building on Monday.
The name of the deceased has not been released.
At approximately 1:20 a.m., crews were dispatched to a structure fire at the East Garden Apartments, 701 E. Lutz Road. An Archbold police officer and Fulton County Sheriff’s Office deputy were first on scene and reported it was a fully involved structure fire in the 800 building.
“A resident of the building was alerting other residents and said the fire was in Apartment 803,” according to information from the Archbold German Township Fire Department. “The resident advised he was unable to make entry into the apartment due to the fire but believed there to be a subject inside the residence.”
The officers entered the building multiple times and used fire extinguishers to try to combat the fire in an attempt to rescue anyone who might be trapped or injured and evacuate other resident. However, they were unable to put out the fire.
Firefighters from the Archbold German Township Fire Department then arrived on scene and began to combat the blaze.
“[They] made an aggressive interior attack of the fire and performed search operations for any trapped occupants,” according to a statement from the fire department. “Firefighters located an individual inside of the apartment where the fire is believed to have originated. Upon extricating the subject from the building, it was found that the subject was deceased.”
Other occupants of the apartment building were also evacuated during this time. After the fire, the building was deemed uninhabitable, displacing residents. Assistance was requested and received by the American Red Cross for the displaced residents.
The Ohio fire marshal was called to the scene to investigate the fire. The cause of the fire remains under investigation.
Assisting at the scene were Wauseon Fire and EMS, Ridgeville Fire Department, Morenci Fire Department and Fayette EMS.
