GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. — The Lourdes University men’s lacrosse team had its five-game winning streak come to an end on Saturday evening as the Gray Wolves dropped a 10-7 decision to seventh-ranked Aquinas in the Wolverine-Hoosier Athletic Conference opener for both teams at the Aquinas Athletic Field.

The Gray Wolves outshot the Saints 47-37 on the day, including 28-14 after halftime, but Aquinas netminder Clayton Boerigter made 24 saves between the posts.

Nick Johnson (Perrysburg) put Lourdes on the scoreboard with 4:07 left in the first half on the man-up, as the two sides ended the first period tied at one.

Aquinas (4-3, 1-0 WHAC) scored the first three goals of the second quarter before Brock Meomartino (Cumberland, R.I.) found the back of the cage to make it a 4-2 game at halftime.

The Saints scored five of the first six goals in the second half to build a 9-3 lead, with Meomartino accounting for the Gray Wolves’ lone goal of the third before Lourdes tried to make a late fourth quarter comeback.

Jake Busta (Carlsbad, Calif.) started the comeback attempt with his goal with 40 seconds remaining.

Trailing 10-4, Tomasz Simeunovic (Whitby, Ont./The Hill Academy) started the late run with a goal with 6:16 to play while Caden Louthan (Dripping Springs, Texas) and Busta followed with goals in the next three minutes. The Gray Wolves would not be able to cut into the deficit any further over the final 3:30.

Noah Loth (Fort Worth, Texas/Aledo) won 13-of-20 faceoffs for Lourdes while Jack Durham (Zeeland, Mich./East) had a team-high eight ground balls. Jack Bichsel (Westerville North) made nine saves in net for the Gray Wolves.
