Russell C. “Barney” Welling age (90), of Luckey, passed away on Thursday, March 23, 2023 at The Gardens of St. Francis, Oregon, OH. He was born on August 14, 1932 in Luckey, OH to Marcus and Leona (Weaks) Welling. He was a graduate of Troy-Luckey High School, and on October 16, 1954, he married Jane Cardosy in Luckey, OH. Barney and Jane have raised 3 sons and celebrated over 66 years of marriage, before Jane’s passing in May of 2021.
Barney was an accomplished finish carpenter, early in his career he was self-employed making and installing custom kitchen cabinets. He later worked for Rudolph Libbe 30 plus years before he finally retired. He was an active member of Zion Lutheran Church in Luckey were his ministries included pastoral council and the church dartball league. He served for a number of years as township trustee and had been instrumental in bringing EMS to Luckey. In addition, he was a former Troy Township Volunteer Fireman. Barney was always about the Village of Luckey and his later years could often be seen taking a drive in his little red truck.
Barney is survived by his sons: Mark (Sonja) Welling of Luckey and Jim (Susan) Welling of Oregon, OH. Daughter-in-law: Gina Welling of AZ. Grandchildren: Stephanie Welling-Majzun, Chad (Megan) Welling, Brooke Welling, Joshua Welling, Morgan Welling and Madison Welling. Great-grandchildren: Ava, Quinn, Alexandria and Robin. In addition to his wife Jane, he was preceded in death by his parents and son, David Welling.
Family and friends will be received 9-11 a.m., with a Funeral Service at 11 a.m., Friday, March 31, 2023 at Zion Lutheran Church, 303 Park Drive Luckey, OH. Barney will be laid to rest next to Jane in Troy Township Cemetery, Luckey, OH. Officiating, will be Pastor Frank Raeske. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorials take the form of contributions to: Zion Lutheran Church or The Gardens of St. Francis.
