At PTC, Fonseca wins ninth straight match

PERRYSBURG – The Bowling Green State University tennis team (6-8 overall, 0-2 MAC) dropped their Friday afternoon match to Miami University (7-9, 1-1 MAC) by a score of 6-1 at Perrysburg Tennis Center Friday.

Leticia Fonseca notched her team-best ninth singles win of the spring, taking a thrilling three-set win at No. 5. She dropped her opening set to Jutte Van Hansewyck, 2-6, but responded with a 6-3 win in set two.

In the tiebreak set, the freshman outlasted her foe for a 10-8 win. Fonseca has won seven of her last eight singles matches, with this marking her second victory at No. 5.

At No. 3, Hannah Neuman also had a three-set battle, winning 6-2 in the opening set before dropping two close sets to Emilia Valentinsson.

Miami won the doubles point with wins at No. 1 and No. 3. At No. 3, Ioanna Tsadari and Diana Ivanikhina played together for the first time in their careers. They nearly defeated the duo of Makensie Long and Sarah Dev, but the RedHawks made a late push to win, 7-5.

Maru Poppe and Fonseca played at No. 2 for the first time this season and were trailing 6-5 when they abandoned the match.

The Falcons travel to Ypsilanti for their first road conference match of the season. Bowling Green faces the Eastern Michigan Eagles, with first serve set for 1 p.m. on Sunday.
