We already have election integrity in Ohio

To the Editor:

Through Senate Bill 51 Sen. Theresa Gavarone intends to add an Election Integrity Division to stop voter fraud. “I have worked hard to stop voter fraud,” she has said.

Republicans claim to support limited government, eliminate wasteful spending and fight all forms of wokeism, whatever that is. So let’s create a new division in state government to fight a problem that doesn’t exist under our current secretary of state but might someday exist under a different secretary of state.

Like voter fraud depends on who the secretary of state happens to be? In an earlier letter I pointed out the secretary of state could not report how much was spent by his office on voter fraud because it was not budgeted separately. They don’t even have a record of what happens after they send the case to prosecutors because there is no mechanism to keep track.

Gavarone has worked hard to stop something that doesn’t exist — or is so small that we don’t even keep track of it. Let’s parade something we can all support. Elections should be fair (really, like gerrymandering? like dark money?) We should go after the bad guys. We should restore faith in the electoral process after destroying it through the big lie.

I am all in favor of election integrity in Ohio. We already have election integrity in Ohio, thanks to the local boards of elections and their staff.
