Four Falcons are Academic All-District

Four members of the Bowling Green State University women’s basketball team have been named to the 2022-23 Academic All-District Team, selected by College Sports Communicators. The team was announced on Tuesday.

Falcons Allison Day, Sophie Dziekan, Lexi Fleming and Amy Velasco all were named to the team.

Day, in her first year with the Falcons after four successful seasons at Loyola University Chicago, is second on the team in scoring, with 12.2 points per game, and also averages 4.6 rebounds per contest.

She is shooting 54.5 percent from the field, leading the entire Mid-American Conference in that category. In league play, she is averaging 15.0 ppg and 5.4 rpg while shooting 55.8% from the floor. Day scored a career-high 31 points in a win over Toledo, and had a 27-point game vs. Miami.

In the classroom, Day is pursuing her MBA with a focus in marketing, and has a perfect 4.0 grade-point average.

Dziekan has blossomed into a key member of the Falcons’ rotation in 2022-23. She has played in all 26 games, and is averaging 5.6 points and 3.6 rebounds per game.

Dziekan is shooting over 60 percent from the field, having gone 64-for-106 (60.4%) on the year, That includes a 7-for-7 effort in a win at Buffalo, in which she scored a career-high 14 points.

Dziekan, a biology major, has a 3.987 cumulative GPA.

Fleming has played in 24 games, making eight starts, this season to date. The MAC Freshman of the Year two seasons ago, she has returned to the court after missing all of last season due to injury.

She is averaging 8.3 points, 3.2 rebounds and 2.5 assists per contest, ranking fourth on the Falcons in assists, third in steals (1.6 spg) and second in assist-to-turnover ratio (2.11).

Fleming is a human development & family studies major at BGSU, and has a 3.915 cumulative GPA.

Velasco has played in all 26 games, making one start and averaging 5.9 points, two rebounds and 2.7 assists. She is third on the team in assist-to-turnover ratio (2.03), and has scored in double digits in seven games this season, including each of the last two contests.

Velasco had a season-high 16 points on Saturday at Western Michigan, scoring 10 of those points during BGSU’s 16-0 fourth-quarter run.

Velasco has a perfect 4.0 GPA as a physical education and health education major at BGSU.
