Prep Roundup: Perrysburg nips Notre Dame, 29-28, advances to district

MILLBURY — Ayla Turk hit two free throws with four seconds remaining to give Perrysburg a four point lead, 29-25, over Toledo Notre Dame in a Division I sectional final at Lake High School Saturday.

The Yellow Jackets nneeded that two-possession cushion, because Notre Dame’s Dakota Smith banked in a three-point goal with 1.5 seconds remaining to bring the Eagles back to within one. The Jackets made sure they inbounded deep to preserve the victory.

Hayley Griggs led Perrysburg with 11 points, including two three-point goals, Wrigley Takats scored eight, and Kallie Thames scored four points.

A close game the entire length, it was tied 7-7 after one quarter, Perrysburg held a slim 16-13 halftime lead, but Notre Dame came back to tie the game, 23-23 entering the fourth quarter.

The defensive game saw 20 turnovers committed by Perrysburg, 19 by Notre Dame. The Jackets were 5-for-10 at the line, the Eagles were 4-for-10, and each team had two three-point goals.

Turk scored three points for the Jackets, Megan Gibbs scored two points, and Chloe Kilbride added one point.

Smith led Notre Dame with 17 points, Amira Dupree scored four points, Nina Sims scored three points, and Ja’Nya Anderson and Katie Bissell scored two points apiece for the Eagles.

Perrysburg (18-6) advances to take on Springfield (17-6) next Thursday at Central Catholic’s Sullivan Center, tipoff at 6 p.m. The winner takes on the Sylvania Southview (16-8)-Toledo Start winner on Saturday at 6 p.m. for the right to advance to the regional tournament.

Wauseon 59, Lake 48

OREGON — Wauseon pulled away in the second half to defeat Lake, 59-48, in a Division II girls basketball sectional at Clay High School’s Harry Potter Field House Saturday.

The Indians led by just three, 20-17, at halftime, but outscored the Flyers 16-12 in the third quarter and 23-19 in the fourth. Lake finishes the season 10-14.

Hayley Meyer led Wauseon with 25 points, including making 11-of-11 free throws. Johanna Tester was 10-for-11 from the line, scoring 17 points. In all, the Indians got 28 free throw attempts, making 23.

Lake’s Sydney Stanley did some free throw shooting of her own, making 9-of-11, and also hitting two three-point goals, scoring a team-high 19 points. Elise Staczek added 11 points for the Flyers.

Jessie Materni scored seven, Lauren Tobias scored six, Penelope Garcia scored three and Kyleigh Christ added two points for Lake. The Flyers were 16-for-27 from the line in a game that saw 55 free throws shot.

For Wauseon, Kaylin Ehrsam and Sophie Rupp scored four points each, Mackensie Stasa and Emmerie Rodriguez scored three apiece, Madison Strain scored two points and Aizlynn Coronado added one point.
