PERRYSBURG — The District 75 Convention of States project will be holding a meeting at the Way Public Library on Feb. 9 with the goal of signing up new supporters, informing the public about their organizational goals.

Hosting the meeting will be Katherine Clark, the Convention of States local District 75 Captain.

Several guest speakers have been invited, including potential Congressional candidates.

Clark will be showing videos with training for current supporters and filling attendees in on the current volunteer opportunities available.

At the top of the agenda will be a discussion about how Northwest Ohio legislators voted for new Ohio House Speaker Jason Stephens.

Clark described past meetings as small and intimate events with a couple dozen attending and that all the local supporters, like Clark, are volunteers.

“This is what I love about this. All of government should happen intimately,” Clark said of the event.

She said the purpose of the organization is to promote three topics: limitation of the scope and power of the government, promotion term limits on elected officials and increasing the fiscal responsibility of government through limitation of entitlement programs and balancing the federal budget.

She explained the group positions with the following statement.

“It’s those kinds of amendments that can come out of this, to just shrink our federal government back to its original box. So you know that the federal government is never going to limit its own growth and size. It’s never going to go willingly smaller. You know that they are never going to pass any kind of term limits on their own,” Clark said.

She explained that the group is part of a national effort to call a convention of states. The concept is part of Article V of the U.S. Constitution, which outlines how the Constitution can be changed, which includes a convention of states as an option, instead of using amendments from Congress.

The Convention of States meeting at the Way, 101 E. Indiana Ave., is Thursday at 6:30 p.m. The national organization’s website is www.conventionofstates.com and questions about the event can be sent to Clark at [email protected].
